No sound with hdmi cable

Hi,

I'm trying to connect my laptop to my tv using a HDMI cable. I can get a picture but no sound. I realise this is a common problem but I have tried everything and nothing has worked so far.

It would be a huge help if someone could help me fix this.

I have tried setting the HDMI output as default. When I do this and play a dvd I can see the green bar move up and down but still no audio.
