No Sound Device can be found

I have an HP Pavilion dv9727 cl laptop with operating system Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit system. I had to have the hard drive replaced in it, when I got it back everything was working fine except for the cd/rom so I bought an external cd/rom which seemed to be working fine. Two to three weeks later I had an red X by the speaker icon at the bottom of the screen, a pop up that says no audio
output device is installed. I have tried everything to no avail, had even considered upgrading the op sys. but I am not so sure that will work. I can no longer find a system restore either. Does anyone have any suggestion for this problem? I am not into spending alot money for this as I have already spent money on getting the hard drive fixed and got more problems or should I look at getting a new computer? Any thoughts?

First since you replaced your hard drive I would do the followning first.

Run a full AV...
Run a full scan with malwarebytes, download the free version...

Also doing a sfc scan might fix the problem...

Open your start menu...
In the search box type cmd...
Right click on the command prompt...
Click run as administrator...
When the command box opens type sfc /scannow, notice the is a slash between the sfc and the forward slash...
Let the computer run and don't use it until the scan is done...
Then you can upload the sfc report to us to see what or if there are any errors.

americancritic- it said windows resource protection did not find any intergrity violations. Also I could not figure out how to "Run a full AV..., Run a full scan with malwarebytes, download the free version... . But I did the sfc scan.

What is a full AV...

An anti-virus full-scan, rather than quick-scan.

I am sorry I should have explained a little more for you.

AV is your computers security which ever one you have you just click the scan button and it will scan your whole system for virus's.

Malwarebytes scans your system for malware.

The sfc came back normal from reading your post which is very good.

Have you thought about doing a system restore, normaly you would go back at least 5 days before the problem started. This is a easy process, if you want to try I will give you the info, a restore resets your computer back to a place before you had the problem.

I can't find a system restore, I have also had this problem since December. If you think you can still help I will be glad to give a try.

Click to expand Sound, video and game controllers

Right-click the Audio > Disable

Right-click the Audio > Enable

I did try disabling the sound ,video, and game controlers and I am also doing a malwarebytes scan

Could I try uninstalling and reinstalling would that be an option?
