Solved I can't get sound coming from the speakers

Hey, I've tried repairing speakers, checking for updates, switching which speakers I use, loads and loads of forums, but I can't get sound coming from the speakers, even though in the tests, they say they're fine. All my speakers/playback devices are showing, working or not, but I can't fix the problem.

I recently had to do a system restore, because of internet problems, took me ages to sort out, however the sound wasn't working before the restore anyway.

Haven't tried uninstalling/reinstalling the sound card/device yet, mainly because I only have my laptop here, if i need any disks then I'll need to wait a while to get them.

Sound does work with external speakers plugged in, so I'm starting to think I might need to get my laptop speakers fixed?

Sony Viao AR-71M is the model, I believe.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated

had you check under >device manager if there is any yellow "?" beside the sound device?

Nah, there's no "?", but the sound does work from external speakers, justnot my laptop, maybe it is the laptop speakers broken?

speakers aren't plugged in and no I don't have Vaio care, might try to download it.

Looks like if you go into classic control panel your will find the loose nut....

I would believe external and phono jack outputs are in parallel...

Gotta be sump'in easy, would imagine....There are so many "directions" ya could go...

Yes, I was not too clear indeed. I am very new here and just threw some suggestions out you way. Yes Matt, Sorry for the muddy waters..

By saying to read the relevant threads on audio problems, I meant, I suppose, that the problem could be quite numerous, therefore read the threads that pertain to the same type of problem.

I have had quite a few "issues" with audio hick-ups myself..I am confidant that you will find the problem being in a setting or another "head slapping solution".

The knowledge base on this site runs very deep indeed. I have found that using the search function on the upper blue banner between the New Posts and Quick Links to be very usefull.

When you do find the solution, and you will, Let me know. Good luck matt!

Suggestion :
Right click on Volume icon at taskbar > Playback Devices > click on the Speaker icon > Properties > under General tab, make sure the Device usage says (enable ) > Levels tab, make sure the slider is way up > Apply/OK

Thanks to everyone who replied to this, I tried things and then suddenly it just started working again... No idea how or why, but I'm very grateful for all the feedback, sorry for replying late though!

My sound also doesn't work, and the solutions given on threads I've read haven't helped. Here are the technicals:

There is no yellow "?" beside device on device manager.
All things are shown as working in dxdiag.
Everything is plugged up same as before.
I've unplugged sound, turned computer off, plugged back in, then restarted twice to no avail.
I get a normal "bloop" sound when I turn the speakers on or plug them in, so something's coming through.
My system shows a sound card installed and working correctly.
Sound is not crackling or distorted, it's simply not playing.
Sound is up to full 100% everywhere I find a sliding bar.
I've also tried turning external speakers up to full, no sound whatsoever.
Everything is up to date.
I've tried sound on various internet sites such as YouTube and Google, Windows Media Player, Media Player Classic Homecinema, and FrostWire, to no avail.

It quit working quite suddenly between late night yesterday (1/28/11) and a little after noon today. There were no warning signs, no crackling before it quit. I'm supposedly the last person to use the computer, as the only other person who had the opportunity claims she didn't. I'm a light sleeper, too, so if she played sound I'd have awoken disgruntled, so I believe she at least didn't play sound.

Hi bluefall, have you tried a different port on your computer and set that as the front speakers? i suspect that the jack input may have failed, just as a test please switch the jack and report back here with the results.

They're color coded, and all--kind of fool proof. Light green jack for light green plug cover. Even so, after having tried all the phono jacks, and all the different USB ports for speaker power, nothing worked. What do you mean by "try a different port on my computer and set that as the front speakers?" Even after studying that thick, 9-in-1 Vista guidebook, using this system is frustrating.

I remember in XP, a man could do a very little amount of research, and the fix for a problem was at his fingertips. Everything was easy to find and access, easy to manage. Why did they make Vista so user unfriendly? It's always been so buggy for me, and so "You, [the administrator and end user of this computer], are not authorized for such and such. Please get the administrator's permission to use this feature." (abridged a little from what the notice that pops up actually says, but I'm sure you've come across it). I'm the administrator, have set no passwords, and have been told things like this from the beginning of having bought it brand new. Sometimes it randomly tells me that games I've played on this computer before from the same commercial CD are now suddenly virus' and the User Account Controls won't let me load it. Sorry for the rant, I hope ya'll aren't vistacultists. In fact, if anybody has any information on this, as well, I'd be glad to hear about it. Maybe my computer has some extremely security tight feature in effect which other computers don't.

I'm just here to help, not to be judgmental, when I say try a different jack, I mean try a different color, they are universal, you are allowed to set which jack does what, so if one jack fails, you can use a different jack to compensate.

I completely understand with the Administrator prompts, they do get annoying, but you know that you can turn them off? go to control panel and select user accounts, choose your account and select "turn user account control on or off", you should get a window similar to this:

Simply uncheck that box and restart your system, no more prompts, apart from windows telling you that you are at risk, hope this helps.

Point in fact, I did do that, turned it off I mean. It didn't help, as my computer continuously had those very security prompts, as well as STILL shutting my programs down. I tried then to include the specific programs in the "exceptions list" in the UAC window with it on. No avail... In fact, when it shut them down it never gave a prompt, simply turned the program off back to desktop.

And those permission prompts are not what I was meaning. I've been flat out told by my computer, without the option to press yes or no, that I'm not authorized to do this or that. It's been so long since I've done anything other than what it'll let me do that I have completely forgotten what it was telling me or what programs or folders I tried to access. However, I hold that I would have preferred XP, had I been old enough and wise enough to ask what I was buying.

But then of course, I wouldn't have had the opportunity to talk to you wonderful people.

Very strange indeed, I've never had one of these security warnings ever since I installed Windows Vista, I have known Vista to moan when you create a user account as a guest to do such things, if you ever have one of these warnings, please do take a screenshot (print screen and paste in paint) and we can diagnose what is going on
