VIA HD Audio - SPDIF Output Does not work

I have recently bought an SPDIF optical cable to run from my PC to my Samsung 5.1 surround. I get no sound. I used to get sound when it was plugged into the headphone out jack with RCA's into the Samsung reciever, but it was stereo surround. I want 5.1 surround. The samsung supports Bluetooth, DIVX, DTS, DOLBY DIGITAL, so its not that. i think its software...

When i play music or games, I open the volume icon beside the clock on the start bar and click 'mixer', it tells me that the output device is 'SPDIF interface', and the green bar on the right is going up and down indicating that the signal is going to the right place. everything seems to be in order, but i get no sound!

i have updated the motherboard audio drivers, plus the VIA HD audio drivers. i am totally stumped. the only thing i havent tried is my hammer. i wanted to ask you all before i do so... ideas please???

First Of All SPDIF sends transmission via Optical/Coaxial Cable in stereo mode.

To enable passthrough you need to have AC3Filter or FFMPEG installed

It is the work of the receiver to decode it into 5.1/2.1/2.0 Sound from stereo.

To Start passthrough go to Start> All Programs>AC3Filter> Check on the Option USE SPDIF.

That should do your work.
