Vista Keeps playing the "lock" sound
This might not be the right board for this, but my Compaq Presario F700 keeps playing the "Exit Windows" sound (Windows Shutdown.wav) seemingly at random intervals. It's not that dire but it does get really annoying
. Any ideas?

It's random, you say? Are you disconnecting USB things like thumb drives alot?
You could go into "Sound" off a typed-in prompt from the Start Menu's search bar and hunt down the Windows activity that's making that sound. It's the Windows Logoff Sound.wav you're looking for.

I like chocolate milk!
Well, I have been using a USB pen drive a lot recently, but I am sure that it is the "Shut Down" sound,
this one , as opposed to the "connect" or "diconnect" sounds. It's not the lock sound actually, I realised that at the last moment and forgot to change the post title, sorry.

Paulie's advice still stands.
Go to Control Panel > Sound, Sounds tab, and check which sounds are associated with the various events in Windows.

I understand that; I don't want to KNOW what sound is playing, I want to know how to stop it from playing so frequently. And if you mean that I should disable the sound completely, that seems a bit drastic.

No, I don't mean disable all sound.
If you find the entry that's causing the sound to be playing in Control Panel > Sound, you can change that entry only to stop playing a sound, or a different one if you want.

I feel like an idiot now
You see, I've found out what the problem is; I use Google Chrome, and I have an extension called Google Mail Checker that checks my email automatically. I didn't realise it plays a sound automatically when mail is received. I apologize, I've been such an idiot.
