"No Audio Output Device Installed"

When I hover over the sound icon, it said "No Audio Output Device Installed". I have had this laptop for over 2 years and this is the first time this has happened.

I have been reading several posts and many of them say to go to the "Sound, Video & Game controllers" tab in the Device Manager. However, that tab doesn't exist for me. I even clicked "Show Hidden Devices".

Any thoughts?

I have the same issue. I have a HP DV9925nr with Vista Home Premium 64bit. A few days ago I had Windows conduct updates and I lost the sound. I thought nothing of it and had Vista update itself to SP2. I had this issue before and after SP2. The sound icon has the "x" over it and lists "no audio output device installed." I have downloaded the Conexant driver several times for my computer and to no avail. I have searched for the speaker device on my computer but it does not exist. When I go to device manager, there is no folder for speakers nor audio. My computer believes that the speakers themselves do not exist. The several remedies that people have posted have offered me nothing. I am not the true computer wiz, but I know that something is seriously wrong with my computer.

*I have also tried using headphones, but I get absolutely nothing out of them.

Well I finally got my sound back. It was by accident and I'm pretty sure it's just another Vista bug. After a hard reset and attempting to install the drivers in safe mode, I tried to check my BIOS for the sound card. (didn't work) After giving up, I logged in one last time to reformat my hard drive and low and behold, sound. I backed up all my data just in case. You should probably do the same.

I have this problem also. No takers on fixing it? Well, if there's someone who can help, please do as this issue is growing in popularity on the internet with no one to really fix it.

My system: HP Pavilion DV6604nr, running Vista 32 bit, Service Pack 2.
Sound driver before this problem: Conexant High Definition Smart Audio HD2

Isssue: Lost sond output on internal speakers headphone jack.

Found "No Audio Output Device is installed" message when I mouse over the speaker icon which has a red X next to it.

Checked Playback and recording Devices - there were some listed, after rebooting, there are none listed in iether the Playback or Recording windows even with show Disabled and Show Disconnected Devices checked.

Rebooted - the driver installed during reboot and the sound worked for about 5 minutes, then went out. No rec X this time, but no sound.

Rebooted - Same issue I started withm - Red X, No playback devices showing.


Tried: resetting my bios to default settings and updating it. No change.

Tried: Downloading all previous and current versions of Conexant HD Audio drivers from HP site and other sites. Conexant does not furnish the driver themselves.
Result: "Could Not find the MEDIA device for this driver" message occurrs each time I try to load the drivers.

Tried restoring to a point before the issue began, but no restore points avalable so went back to the oldest avalable - problem still exists.

Tried using HP Recovery Manager to install original driver - get same "can't find the Media device" error message as I did with the other drivers.

Ensured I have the latest Vista updates installed - the issue continues.

Any other ideas out there? Thanks.

I tried nearly every conventional way to fix it but to no avail. So I tried a few unconventional methods. If you log on into Windows, wait a few minutes and then press and hold the power button until the laptop turns off. After another 30 second wait, turn it back on. This worked for me but I have Vista 64-bit. Hope it works for you too.

Thanks, yes I tried that and unfortunatley, it didnt work. I also tried putting it in hibernate and then shutting it down.

I removed the Roxio and Quick play programs and then re-installed the original Quick play program. No change.

It got worse today, after I rebooted it, the speaker icon went away. Oh well, I have to find out if it's the sound card. I know it's rare for them to go, but it's the only thing left that I can think of to troublshoot. A freind of mine said he would lend me his instance of Unix. I can install it and see if the card works that way. If it does, then at least I've eliminated that posibility.

Hello guys,

I myself disabled the microphone in sound window without knowing that it will not be enabled again. Jus i saw that the below options (configure, set default, properties) are also disabled and i am not understanding how to enable the microphone. i am updating drivers its saying no audio media device is installed, plz help me. i am in urgent need of this..

Had to isolate vista from the sound card, dowloaded knopixx linux boot OS, saved to dvd, and booted up. Linux couldn't find the sound card either, so the card is bad. I picked up a usb external sound card, booted back up with vista, it installed the drivers and now I have sound.

I've been having this exact same problem as you guys have mentioned. I'm thinking it's a hardware problem with the sound card. Though I'm reluctant to open up my laptop (HP Pavilion dv2000, Vista Home Premium). I might just try a usb external sound card. Just curious, do the above posters move their laptop often? I travel with mine a regular basis and sometimes I think it expediates the wear and tear.

Exact same problem here, but my sound sometimes works, it just either works or it doesn't. My problem started about a week ago after I changed the language system locale on my computer. The sound magically came on again after a while though and I thought it was all back to normal because it was fine for over a week, but I just got the problem back again this morning and it is worse now. Sometimes when I switch on the computer, the sound will be on, but more often than not the sound driver apparently doesn't exist.

uralowl......it's frustrating isn't it? Just one day the sound magically came back. And then the next day 'No Audio Output Device is Installed'. I still don't know if it's something physical with my computer because I travel with it often and once I left it in my trunk while it was freezing cold outside. To this day I haven't found a solution :(

I have a HP Laptop that is doing the same thing, works now, later does not work. I read somewhere that it is a problem with SP2, but not completely sure that is the problem because I can not remove SP2 to test it. There are several ways on a site that "tells" how to remove it (SP2) but I can not seem to do it. The uninstall listing feature does not show SP2 in the listing of programs/files to uninstall.

Anyone come up with a way to remove SP2 other than restoring Vista to its original manufacture state?

HP or MS does not seem to have a fix that does not include restore.

HELP!!!!!

I lost mine too. Along with my dvd drive! I have a hard time believing all of our cards just happened to die at the same time after this update.
