Connected HDTV to PC - NO SOUND AT ALL

Hi everyone,

Please could you help. I have a Hitachi 26" HDTV that I have connected to my PC via a HDMI - DVI cable + stereo jack. The picture is fantastic bit I have no sound at all. I have connected up using RGB cable, sound is fine. I have asked around and apart from people trying to sell me extra cables costing £40-£50 I have not had much luck. I think I have 2 motherboard (sorry not very tech minded) one is M3A motherboard and the other is K10N78hSLI-GLAN. I have checked all setting etc, volume on all is up. I have Realtek High Definition Audio.

ok just a run down of what you have done, connected your tv to your pc via DVI to HDMi adaptor and audio is connected via stereo jack, is there a function on your television that can have 2 audio sources from different inputs, if not, you can get audio through your HDMi input by connecting the SP/DIF to the graphics card,
ive included a snapshot of your motherboards user manual information on HDMi SPDIF connection. i have also included the PDF document for your motherboard.

MrNeeds,

I don't have 2 audio sources from different inputs on the tv, I think the TV automatically chooses audio for each channelie:HDMI ,RGB(Component) and Digital TV. I presumed that the PC did the same when the DVI cable was connected. The little speaker sign bottom right of screen says it is Realtek HD audio. Do you know if I have to open up the pc and have a fiddle?

some hd outputs do not support sound you have to plug a diffrent speaker in like speakers into head phone socket

I've tried plugging external speakers in everywhere but still I can't get any sound. I do get the welcome sound through the TV when I turn on the PC but thats about it. I am wondering if this problem is because I have a 9800GT as quite a few people are having the same problem.

Yes it does. You need a cable just like the one MrNeeds pictured, and it needs to connect to the SPDIF connector on both the video card and on the motherboard. No cable, no sound over HDMI.

Today I contacted the company that built my pc and they said they would send me the cable in question. Once I receive it and fit it (with some help hopefully) I will post back and let you all know how it went. Thanks for all your help.

It is a pretty easy and straight forward thing to connect. Just locate the SPDIF header on the motherboard (check the manual if unsure) and the one on the card, connect the cable, and when you want to use the HDMI connection set it as the default playback device in the Vista audio settings.

P.S. Just in case, have the computer turned off before opening it up.

I still can't fathom why I can get the windows welcome sound but nothing else. Is there a way I can just get sound without having to attach the cable?

have you set HDMi as the default sound device?
and just for future reference, yes you need the cable connected otherwise you get no sound over HDMi as stormy13http://www.vistax64.com/members/stormy13.html has said before.

I don't have (Realtek HDMI Output) showing in the playback screen, just the other two. With regards to my last post, I don't really mind if I have HDMI sound or not, any sound will do. That's what I meant about the windows welcome tune and then nothing. I am really nervous about connecting the lead for HDMI (when I get received it), the manual is not very clear, but I will cross that bridge when I come to it. I think this issue will be resolved in the end as you are all so helpful. I am so pleased I joined this Forum. Thanks

Let's try and clear up a couple of questions,

1. When you go to the Sound settings like in the screen shot MrNeeds posted, what is showing and what is set as default?

2. What if any speakers are connected to the computer?

3. Where exactly are the speakers connected? Are the connected to the analogue ports or the digital ports?

Dont quote me on this... but im almost certain that DVI does not support sound.
DVI Stands for "Digital Visual Interface" If you were to get audio threw DVI then it would have to be DVMI "Digital visual and Multimedia interface" and im sure such a connection does not exist, unless you would consider HDMI as such a connection

HDMI Stands for "High Definition Multimedia Interface" see note "Multimedia" in this meaning... Multimedia is not limited to one meadia source but groups to several media sources weather it be audio or visual

Now as far as im concerned the only 2 ways of getting audio to your tv is by connecting via jacks, dins and optical out dependant on how good your connections on ur tv and pc are or most logic and common method of using direct HDMI to HDMI which does support audio

You're right it doesn't. But on ATI and Nvidia cards that support it, the DVI port (one, if not both) has the extra pins that when used with a DVI-HDMI adapter (which comes with most of the cards) or cable will pass audio. The ATI cards (HD 2xxx series and up) all have the audio chip (Realtek actually) on the card and just need to appropriate driver installed; the Nvidia cards use the SPDIF connection between the card and sound card (not sure which of the Nv cards were the first, but pretty sure most of the 9xxx series and up use this method).

My TV has the HDMI lead plugged in where it says HDMI IN 1 (DVI), this is plugged in to the PC via the HDMI/DVI adapter that came with the pc. The TV has a green stereo jack (3.5mm) next to the HDMI port that is labelled Audio in (RGB/DVI) I have plugged the 3.5mm lead from the TV's stereo jack to the PC's green 3.5mm jack (the one you normally connect to get sound from PC when connected to an LCD Monitor. When I right click the speaker (bottom right) and select playback I just have two options, Speakers - 2 Realtek High Definition Audio working (with a green tick next to it) and Realtek Digital Output - 2 Realtek High Definition Audio working. I hope this is enough information, sorry if it isn't, just let me know and thanks for you continued help.

Maybe the HDMI to DVI Adapter is where you problem lies... try checking the adaptor pins make sure you have a full set of pins and not just the select few that are required for displaying video

Thanks for the link, it's brilliant. I now know I have a DVI-D connector attached to my pc and the HDMI cable plugs into this and the other end (HDMI cable) plugs into my TV. Reading that link, I would have thought that I would have sound (but no).

The reason you don't have sound over HDMI at the moment all comes back to what MrNeeds and I have been telling you, without the SPDIF cable from the onboard sound (connector is located between the back edge of the motherboard and the middle PCI slot, according to the manual for your board) to the video card (can't point that out as you didn't list the manufacturer of your video card; Asus, BFG, EVGA, etc). Borrowed this from the manual for the Gigabyte 9800 GT,

which shows the location of the SPDIF header on that card.

As for why you are not getting any sound from the analogue connection between the computer and the TV, no idea. Going to have to wait for someone familiar with the ins and outs of Realtek onboard sound.

i havent connected the cable myself, but im going to do it soon, il post pics of what i have done and how it all works, some aspects may be different because of graphics card type but it may be relevant.
