Is there a way to control volume of the Line In ? I have Sigma Tel HD Audio Codec and when I go through all the control panel maze to get to it and click on 'Properties' there is no level control. Apparently Realtek must have a volume control (?). If the Sigma codec can't control the volume of Line In, can I change to a realtek or something else?
The audio controls are installed with the relevant audio driver, and it depends on what the manufacturer decides to include, although it is unusual for there not to be level controls for available input devices. You cannot change the driver to any other make as the driver software will not be compatible with the hardware. Here is a link to the Drivers & Downloads page for your laptop.

Thank you, thank you! - I was able to download a newer version of the Sigma Tel driver from the link you supplied (Dell Support) which has been improved to add input level controls. Problem solved!
