Sound doesn't switch from speakers to headphones

Hello,

I'm having an incredibly irritating problem with my sound in Vista Enterprise x64, I'm hoping someone can help. I have a Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio card, and I have the latest drivers installed.

The problem is that when I'm listening to music or playing a game, the sound works just fine on my speakers. But if I plug in my headphones to the front port, the sound continues to come out of my speakers, and not my headphones. The only way to get the sound to come out of my headphones and not the speakers is to re-launch the application that is producing sound. The same is true vice-versa (going from headphones back to speakers).

I have set my default output device to be the headphones and have played around with every setting in the Sound Blaster and Vista Sound control panels I can find - nothing seems to work.

I have read through other forums with similar issues, but they're all either a different issue (i.e. they get sound out of the speakers and the headphones - I only get it out of one, and not the right one), or the threads seem to have dropped off unsolved.

Anyone have a fix for this or at least experiencing the same issue? Your help is greatly appreciated.

I do - your speakers were set as default - plug in the headphones, then make them the default - then when you unplug the headphones, the speakers should take over, and the next time you plug in the headphones they should *automatically* become the default again.

Can headphones be inserted on the rear panel just like it was possible in XP and be detected as headphones?

If you have Realtek drivers then you can change the way the jacks are and whether they monitor for input or not. But I beleieve it is limited (I am not 100% sure as I don't use jack sensing at all).

I know in XP is a lot easier... I can't understand why they can't be like XP in that regards.

my speakers work fine without the default device thing, default devices shouldnt detect a headset at all, but realtek drivers detect it in the CP. heres a few pictures with jack sensoring in play.

Yes but this is specifically for the front panel... I wish I could do this for the REAR panel as you could in win XP.

you can as long as jack detection is enabled.

It is enabled... but it doesn't show up the pop up as in the front panel you show there... I have been trying to do this for over a year if you watch this post.

ok, try this then, double click the green jack on the realtek hd audio control panel, ive included a pic, and change that to headphones, try that and see if it works, you need your headphones plugged in while you do it.

When I do that... it will NOT pop up that box... that has been my issue since FOREVER

I see that it can be done in vista... any help will be appreciated.

If i connect anything to the jack I get the balloon box saying that i have just connected something but the box will NOT appear. NO matter what driver I use.

This is an ALC885 from an nforce 680i motherboard. That box will only pop up for the front channel Speaker... not for any of the rear jacks or front mic.. and since i do not have the provisions to connect the front channel... well I'm screwed :S

Make and model of the motherboard please.

One thing that may or may not help; assuming that you built the computer yourself, does the case have two different connectors for the front panel jacks? Reason for asking is there are two different types; there is the AC'97 and there is a HDA connector. I borrowed this,

from a case that has both, and as you can see the pinouts are different for each. If your case does have both it would go a long way to explaining the trouble you are having if you have the wrong one connected.

As i said, i do not have the front panel connected... I wish I did.

its not a driver issue, its an application issue, maybe your system doesnt have authority to run that program, have you disabled any audio related start up items?

Possibly a bit late a reply but I've had this problem, to solve the problem for 'realtek' I went on Device advanced settings and selected the first option 'Mute the rear output device.....' because I was playing around with speakers earlier,
