5.1/7.1 recommendations??

ive been using my inspire 5100 5.1 surround for about 7 years & want to replace them. I had a glance at gigaworks g500 & decided against them coz i dont want to skyrocket my electricity bill.

I was thinking of going for Creative Inspire 7.1 T7900 but at the moment im not sure i have enough room for 2 other speakers. If i bought these & decided not to plug the side speakers in would it work as 5.1?

Yes, that should be possible. You should be able to configure the audio output so that it can operate in 2 channel mode for stereo speaker output, 4 channel mode for 4 speaker output, 6 channel mode for 5.1 speaker output and 8 channel mode for 7.1 speaker output. Note that it will only work correctly in a specific mode if you set it to that mode.

Another set of 5.1 speakers to take a look at are the Logitech X-540 speakers. I bought a set over a month ago, and like them much better than my old Altec Lansing 5.1 set, which I gave to a friend.
