I have a dell inspiron 531 with windows vista home premium. i have a Realtek ALC888 HD Audio sound card.
recently, the audio when i play music has been malfunctioning, and the bass suddenly cuts out, leaving only a tinny, muted sound playing. i tried a different player, to no avail. this happened 4 months ago, and dell resolved the situation, although i forgot how.
we (dell and I) installed the updated driver (as of this month), and that did not work. we then system restored to the day before when I the latest quicktime, but this did not work either.
a minute ago I tried to install the new version of the driver again, and that did not work either. I am out of ideas. Does anyone know what could be the issue?
After installing the new driver twice, I checked the properties for it, and it still says that the driver date is in 2006. Does this mean that the new driver hasn't installed?
The driver is the only thing I can think of that would be causing my bass to be totally non-existent when I play sound.
Yep, it did not install correctly. I just made another post in this very same forum about how to (possibly) fix it so here it is again:
You might try Guru3D - Driver Sweeper to remove your currently installed drivers, and then try installing the latest version only....
Download the Driver Sweeper package, and install it.
Reboot into Safe Mode
Run Driver Sweeper and select the Realtek Audio drivers for removal.
Remove them
Reboot and allow to normally boot into Vista
Install the R1.96 drivers.
See if this method allows for the driver to work correctly.

thank you - i am currently working with dell support on this. we have removed the driver totally and then reinstalled new one so that the date on the driver properties now reads 2008, but I am having the same problem.
dell uninstalled the sound blaster audigy advanced mb, but now the install files for sound blaster wont reinstall, saying there is no supported device. dell is stumped and i will have to resume troubleshooting tomorrow as I have no time right now.
If it cannot detect the device, make sure it is plugged in / seated correctly. If is it integrated with the motherboard, have Dell replace the motherboard.

Sound like a cable fault, maybe your audio system is at fault. Try a set of headphones or a headset to test the jack output, maybe the jack at fault aswell.
