Codec Destroyed itself?

I use to be able to watch MPEG MPG and pretty much all movies formats on WMP except .avi but that was no big deal.
All of a sudden all video files won't play on WMP.
I get an error message like this.

Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.

MP3's still work but It won't even play CD's anymore.
I tried installing the cole codec pack that didn't work. I have tried a dozen or so Codec packs to no avail.

I have followed the correct procedure when installing each time.
Uninstall the old pack install new restart computer.

I can't find the answer anywhere.
Anyone have an Idea as to what may be wrong?
It just stopped suddenly.
Worked fine and then, nope not anymore.
This has me very frustrated.

This happened after I installed Registry Booster 2.
I have since then uninstalled this program.

Does your registry booster come with a restore feature?

also...no point adding more codec packs..in fact they are always a pain to deal with. Just install codecs you need and not a lot of them at same time

I did a system restore to the day before the problems started. Date was 12/26/07.
I have GSpot which tells me the Codec's I'm missing but the one's it says I am missing I already have.

Also,
On another note. How do I determine what version of Vista do I have?

All in all the O.S. has been awesome.
I don't know why people down it.

i've solved similar problems in the past with re-installing wmp.

How do I uninstall what I have now?

When I uninstall it, will I lose my saved playlists and what not?

Say I mess something up, can I do a system restore to before when I un-installed it and still have my settings and such?

you could make a restore point just before commencing the operation. then just install the file you downloaded from microsoft over the existing install. i don't think the playlists will get lost, but you might copy them from c:\users\<your userid>\music\playlists to another location temporarily.

When I tired to install it it gives me the message
"There is a more recent version of Windows Media Player installed on your computer.
It is not possible to use an older installation package to install files or repair your current version."

Yes.

I gave me a string of numbers as to what version I had and what version the one I downloaded was.

Do you need these strings of numbers?

nope; for the moment i'm out of ideas. unless you have a backup image of your system. i don't think it would be wise for me to advise you to experiment with codec-packs like k-lite.

My feelings are...Registry Booster has messed up your registry files in some way and you have compounded the problem by adding several codec packs which, especially those free ones...tend to cause lots of conlicts.

Is it possible for you to remove all the codecs you have installed without removing the codecs that Vista installs?

With all this messing up and all... I'm afraid to say a Vista repair installation may be required.

Before we do that we have to try and eliminate the chance that the media files you are trying to play are not corrupted in some way...do any video files play on another PC by any chance?

Too many codec do conflict with each other...
