help! USB HDD docking stn seen only as empty removable disk whats going wrong ???

trying to get old HDD data from drives now I have an external docking station. First attempt worked then after a lock up and reboot it then sees it as just a Removable Disk and on double clicking it it asks for a "Disk to be inserted into the removable Disk"
Any suggestions ??
