New Laptop, tearing when watching video.

Hi Guys,

Newbee here with a question.
I have my laptop connected to my LCD TV via HDMI cable. I am seeing some tearing on the TV screen however when I watch video on the laptop screen it seems to be OK.
Card is an NVidia GeForce 8200M G , Laptop is a Compaq Presario CQ60 430SA,TV is a Toshiba Regza.
Audio runs through a seperate two chanel HIFI amp via the headphone socket on the laptop.

Any ideas how to sort this? I use Windows Media Centre and have downloaded Vista codec package 6.2.1 from Shark007 from here -- |MG| Vista Codec Package 6.2.1 Download

Hello, I would check on NVidia site for latest HDMI driver to be sure that that is not your issue. Edit: corrected phrasing.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I have checked via device manager and it tells me the current driver is up to date, do I need to install another driver? I also dont have any audio through HDMI so does this mean I also need an audio driver?
Please excuse my questions if they seem obvious , I am not very computer literate.

Edit to add = The laptop is new/reconditioned so perhaps the drivers did not come included in it?

I was wondering about the Video , can you use another TV to check or is that the only one available ? As far as sound, you probably don't have the HDMI Audio as default . You would need to open up your Audio Manager and see what you have selected or enabled .

Hi, I have the audio mixer ''playback devices'' set to HDMI and still no audio, this isnt too much of an issue as I can use my HIFI for audio. I went on the NVidia web page and it scanned my computer, it recommended a new driver NVIDIA DRIVERS 1.00.00.59 WHQL even though windows said It was up to date which I downloaded, however my PC's (vista's) ''Data Execution Prevention'' kept closing the NVidia control panel when I tried to set it all up for dual display.
I had to go to a restore point to get it back to the original driver.

I have tried different display resoloution settings and different refresh rates but still no joy.

This is the only TV I have I'm afraid.

This problem only happens when playing video, it doesnt happen as fdar as I'm aware when things like WMC are being shown on the TV screen.

Are you seeing a red icon in the Taskbar ? This would be the Audio Manager, you have been , from what i can tell, in the Sound Manager . But, that is kinda where i wanted you anyways. Do you have a check mark showing in the Speakers icon at top of page ? If so, good, now in the Stereo config, how many speakers do you have installed ? If 2 speakers, use the 2 setting. Test sound now .

Hi, I have no red icon just the little speaker. When I right click and go to play back devices it gives me two options, speakers (conexant high defination smart audio 221 working) and Digital output device (HDMI) (high definition audio device working)

I have set the latter to default.

I have also set up the speaker arrangement and it now plays sound through the TV via HDMI. Thank you.

I have tried a DVD and the tearing seems to have gone, it isnt a great picture, looks like a vhs video however this could be just the DVD I am watching.

I have just tried the sample videos in vista and they seem the same, grainy and video cassette tape like, however the set up video in WMC seems much much better and as I would expect.

Well, at least we have made improvements . As far as the red icon for the Audio Manager, you could check out Task Manager, properties , Notification Area tab, check in the customize button and see what the realtek HD Audio Manager is set for , mine is set at hide when inactive.

My task manager doesnt have a propertys tab, ctrl.alt and delete? click ''start task manager'' then I have a box with tabs for applications, processes, services, performance, networking and users.

Ah , I just right clicked the task bar and got into customize but there is no realtek in there. I did a search for realtek in the start menue search bar and it came up with nothing.

Just to point something obvious out, is the tv 50Hz or 60Hz? If it's 50Hz then the video may become better and tearing should disappear if you enable v-sync if you're using WMC, seeing as it is a 3D application, it may just need enabling.

Right click the desktop and open up nvidia control panel, go to the 3D image settings and at the bottom should be vertical sync, force on and apply, try again and see if the tearing is there.

I am not sure howmany Hz it is, the manual is here http://www.toshiba-om.net/PDF/English/Country_Specific/AV615-1922263237-English-Specific.pdf from what I can see it is 60 and 50?

When I use the TV menue ''HDMI1 1080i HD'' shows for a couple of seconds in the top right of the tv screen.

My Nvidia settings are

resolution .
Display = 1336 x 768 60 Hertz highest 32bit colour.

Flat panel scaling,

native resolution, 1336 x 768
current resolution, 1336 x 768

when using a resolution lower than my displays native resolution = use nvidia scaling.

sigital colour format = rgb.

I have tried the 3D setting but the tearing is still there.

And now for some reason on WMC when playing video dvd I have a thick border around the screen , black on both sides and grey on the top and bottom.
Any ideas guys?

Even though it's native is 1366x768, I'd drop the resolution down to 1280x720, that'll probably get rid of the black border for you, we call that video overscan, which usually occurs when the tv is using the wrong resolution.

Would that be in WMC set up , the video card (NVidia) or in windows?
I think I have already tried that but I will try again after tea.

OK , In Nvidia control panel it is set to 1280 x 720 at 60 hertz and I am still getting the black down each side and grey top and bottom.

Could this be a WMC issue as it only happens on WMC?

In WMC sample videos I only get black down each side and no grey top and bottom.

Edit - sorry , it's happening in VLC as well.

The behavior of WMC is related to something called overscan which you can read about at places like wikipedia. Most, but not all, video software adjusts automatically by adding the black bars to keep the video from being distorted or pixelated and to keep the top and bottom from being cropped, which would happen if it tried to stretch the video to fill the screen. This normally happens when watching low resolution video on something that has a higher resolution. However, I don't think that's related to the tearing problem.

Problem solved.

I had to roll back to a previous NVidia driver. In flat panel scalinbg it gives me the option to ''use my displays built in scaling'', I have also set my TV picture to ''Native''.
This seems to have done the trick , no tearing and no black border.

The picture quality isnt very impressive but this could be down to the TV being old or the DVD (battlestar galactica) quality i'm watching not being great
