I am running x64 Vista and am interested in installing a permanent version of Microsoft Office (Home/Student) Edition. Microsoft Office '07 is already installed on my computer but it is not yet 'activated' and I've already used the 60 day trial version.
From what I understand, I simply need to acquire an authorization key to unlock the '07 version for full use. However, I am confused as to whether the authorization keys available at stores (Office Max, Bestbuy, etc) will work as they all say they are keys for Microsoft Office 2010 version.
Alternatively, I tried to use the "Activation Assistant" but it directs me to the page: www.microsoft.com/office/pctrial2007 which appears as a dead link.
I am assuming the Microsoft Office 2010 version authorization key will work, but would like some clarity or confirmation before I drop $120 at a retailer or activate online.
You can't use the Office 2010 Activation Keys to activate an Office 2007 Trial. You will need to uninstall the 2007 trial and either install an Office 2010 Trial and then purchase a 2010 key to activate that or simply purchase the full 2010 product and install it. Here's some help on uninstalling the trial if the normal process doesn't work or doesn't work right: How do I uninstall Office 2003, Office 2007 or Office 2010 suites if I cannot uninstall it from Control Panel?.
Alternatively, you may still be able to purchase the 2007 version online at the following: Microsoft Office Online but I haven't confirmed this is actually still available or if it will work if the trial was obtained elsewhere - if you really want the 2007 version rather than the 2010 version, then give them a call and see what they have to say and what they have to offer.
IMHO, I would simply go with the new 2010 version and forget 2007 at this point - it's a better product and you will get better support (and the difference in pricing really isn't much of a factor if of any consequence at all). Plus you'll be better off having the disk rather than just a download in case you run into problems later (like corruption of the download file or wanting to make certain types of revisions or whatever).
