16 bit MS-DOS subsystem error all the time

Whenever I try to download something, a 16-bit MS-DOS subsystem error pops up and the download is cancelled. For example when I try to download google chrome, A message pops up like this

C:\users\user\DOWNLO~1\CHROME~1.EXE
The NTYDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
CS:11de IP:011d OP:63 72 65 65 6e Choose 'close' to terminate the application.

The message pops up on my windows vista home premium 32bit, even though i'm not trying to access a 16=-bit program. Please help :(

It looks like it's trying to use short filenames. You may not have them enabled. What are you downloading with?

I would search on fsutil command. There should be a way to disconver if short filenames are enabled. On my system I disabled 'em since I don't remember the last time I used something with a tilde '~' in the name.

There should be a page on Microsoft or a tips site with all the subcommands.

It's used in a command prompt to get info about NTFS file system settings, and to set options like system memory used for caching, and other options. One should be short file names.

er... I'm not exactly knowledgeable in this field.... so what are subcommands?? And I should disable the fsutil command right? I found it on my laptop but ... I dun really know how to disable it... sorry to bother you further.

fsutil is a utility to control options to do with the NTFS file system.

See this tutorial how to open an elevated command prompt:

after you have the prompt open, run this command line just as typed:

fsutil behavior query disable8dot3


it should reply
disable8dot3 = 0

if 8.3 filenames are disabled.
Post the result you get

hmmmmmmmm, maybe has nothing to do with 8.3 filenames. I found this search the OP number:

DO NOT right-click and Save as...
Instead left-click, or (if you 're using tabs) right-click and select Open to a new tab (or window) ;)

To determine if it's a browser thing or an OS thing the fastest way may be to try Firefox or Opera and download some stuff. See what happens.

Well, I tried disabling fsutil command and it did reply disable8dot3=0. However, I still cannot download chrome, or firefox OR opera in this case... the same message comes out :(

Is there someone who can burn Firefox installer on CD for you or copy it to USB?
If your machine is too broken you need help from someone with a healthy PC.

I tried installing Firefox, Chrome and Opera from a transferred installer in my friend's laptop and I still get the same message. The thing is, is it something wrnog with my software or my hardware? Thanks anyway.

You mean those programs won't install or they install but you still can't download?

At this point I think I would run some virus scans.
If nothing is found after a few then you may need to consider reinstall.

It pops up everytime I try to install anything... and I did run virus scans before I posted this thread but nothing's wrong . And actually my laptop had a Bluescreen of Death and I had to do a recovery, but the problem existed before I did the recovery and after as you can see ........ sorry I didn't inform you prior notice

As a test why not try installing this app I wrote:
http://www.favessoft.com/TraySetup.zip

It uses Inno Setup to install rather than Windows Installer.
If you don't get the error then it may be a Windows Installer problem.

There may be a fix for it on Microsoft site.
If it does get the error then I have no clue.

I can install the app perfectly :D. If I use your app, does that mean that I transfer all the stuff I want to download from the internet such as chrome/firefox/ into a disc then download it from there? And another thing, if it IS a microsoft installer problem, what should I do?

Go to Microsoft.com and search on the error code.
It's bound to be an installer error.
