Visual Studio 2008 Pro cab1.cab has an invalid digital signature

Hi,

I am trying to install Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition (download from Microsoft Dreamspark: https://www.dreamspark.com/Default.aspx) but every time, I get cab1.cab has an invalid Digital Signature.

This install of Vista was a completely clean install less than a month ago, but it has never been quite right, so I may do another clean install. Everything has been an argument with the computer, a battle of errors and solutions. If I knew the next clean install would be better, I would do one immediately.

I have searched the internet for about a month now, and have tried every solution I have found. I have checked that cab1.cab does indeed have a valid digital signature, it does, and so do all the others I have checked. This has happened with two downloads of the same file iso file. One of them has been tried and tested with this machine before the clean install and several other computers, all immediate successes, so it is not a corrupt iso file.

I have followed every solution on the two Heath Stewart blogs and several more.

I have:

• Run sfc /scannow. No problems.
• Defragmented my hard disk.
• Copied the files to hard disk, run off DVD, run from iso, and repeated with other iso.
• Disabled all CRL checks using setreg.exe
• Downloaded the CRL list although my internet has been connected all the time.
• Done a System Restore, same problem.
• Used signtool.exe on cab1.cab and others, digital signature validated successfully.

I am getting so annoyed now. I am a programmer, and have not written a single line of code for over a month now! Please do not tell me to use Notepad and csc.exe! I cannot even continue with Project Euler: Project Euler

If I thought that I would be able to uninstall it and not cause massive problems later, I would try Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2.

Does anyone have any more suggestions?

Hello niemiro,
Is this the only program you are having problems with, or is there a problem when installing anything else ?.
I'm wondering if your Windows installer is in some way affecting this install.
Also, just to be sure we are on the same page, when you say you did a clean install, do you mean a format and install ?.

Thanks for responding. All other installs work perfectly first time, it is just VS that is giving me problems. When I said clean install, it was a proper clean install, including format of hard disk and removal of all programs and setting etc. (ie not a repair install) I did nothing silly such as copy my old Program Files folder back, I properly reinstalled my most needed apps and copied back some of my Documents folder.

PS If someone can assure me that VS 2010 Beta 2 will not give me headaches later, I will forget about VS2008.

Hi,

In case your interested, I have worked on this for another month and still no joy. All I succeded in doing was engraving my name on the three background images that rotate around during install.

I used the same install DVD and installed it on my laptop. This worked first time, no errors at all. So I now program off my laptop with an external monitor, keyboard and mouse. I have installed VS2010 Beta 2 on my Desktop. When I get round to it, I will install the RC. However, 3.3gb on my really, really bad internet connection can take up to 72 hours, and the internet regularly stops working for several hours or more. The new Microsoft Dreamspark servers do not support download resuming (the old ones did) and so getting the whole file takes me weeks.

I tried a Virtual PC, but for some strange reason, when trying to install Vista, it kept getting stuck at "Expanding Files (0%)" Anyway, I am happy with coding off my laptop.

When the final release of VS2010 comes out, I will download and install it. If that will not install, I will do another clean install then.

Hard disk failed so bought a new one (beautiful SATA 3/600, with a cache of 64Mb, 8ms and 7,200 rpm, 1TB) and reinstalled Windows. All problems (with this and many others) fixed. I do not necessarily think this was the cause of this problem, the hard disk only just showed up as failing on the scanners, and certainly no indicators of a failing hard disk. Can now code easily again!

Have you got VS 2010? I had 2008 and I an thinking on upgrading but I don't know.

I do. I have VS 2010 Professional for serious coding, and SQL Server 2010 Developer Edition. Microsoft give them to me for free, there is no way I could pay for them.

In terms of upgrading, I assume this is for Express Editions. You will not like the new interfece. Write a small Console Application to get into VS 2010, and you will LOVE IT. There are dramatic improvments, and I would recommend an immediate upgrade, though be warned that the new UI will take one small application to get used to, so don't give up, and reap the rewards of the upgrade.

Thanks, I'll upgrade as soon as I can. I'm trying to get it off dreamspark, but I am in contact with microsoft because my school isn't listed.

Dreamspark is great, though primarily for Universities and the occasional Sitxh Form Centre.
