The important bit is if the restore program on the bootable rescue CD can see the HD in the machine. When you make the backup image, you are running Windows. The Windows driver for the HD controller is running. You need to verify that the boot or rescue CD has a driver for the HD in question. Most often you can do this by downloading the trial version, or free version of an image backup software such as Macrium Reflect or Paragon Drive Backup, and make the Linux Rescue CD. Do an image backup. Then boot the Rescue CD and start the restore program. If there's a problem you will usually find out before even actually starting the restore process(such as the restore program won't be able to see the HD in the PC or it can only access it in super slow compatibility mode.)
Best to find out before relying on it.
