Can you please recommend a VERY GOOD Antivirus..

Can you please help me to buy a VERY GOOD antivirus im willing to purchase one because i badly needed it... and can you tell me why is that good over the others.. Thanks. :D

Hi,

ESET Smart Security wins hands down. It's much lighter on system resources in general and catches potential threats before they can get loose on your system. I have tried all of the others on various PCs (from modern to older models) and it is just the fastest IMHO. Others just make the machine too slow for a lot of people.

the firewall is excellent in the latest version (v4) and antispam is great too.

lastly, it's highly configurable unlike others. If you're just after antivirus, then ESET NOD (which is built into ESET Smart Security) is the best in many respects.

However there are many good ones out there Avira to name one , have a good rummage through here AV-Comparatives - Independent Tests of Anti-Virus Software - Welcome to AV-Comparatives.org its a trusted site and will tell you all you need to know about whats good and whats not (look under the comparatives tab)

good choice! I switched from norton antivirus + zone alarm pro to ESET and I haven't had one problem since (nearly 2 years now).

Kaspersky is always a good choice judging buy the reviews.

I think it is pointless anybody saying their option is the best on the basis that they never have a virus due to their AV. How do they know?

I tried Kaspersky about 3x over the last few years because apparently it was 'one of the best'.

On all 3 occasions after having installed it my internet simply would not work anymore.
disabling it? nothing.
removing it from windows boot? nothing.
shutting down ANY kaspersky process I could find? nothing.

UNINSTALLING it? one reboot and my internet worked again!

I'm sure it wasn't anything serious and was probably something about conflicting system files/settings but at that time I was unable to find a reason/fix for it so I just gave up on Kaspersky.

I use NOD32 antivirus 4.0.417. Less false positives, higher detection rate & low on resources.

Actually Avira has slipped from 3-star certification to 2-star in recent on demand testing [Feb 2008]

This is where people go wrong- Antivirus Protection is not subjective, It either protects and performs or it doesnt. "recommendations", or "Editor's Reviews" or
Editor's Choice Awards" are meaningless If the program is lacking in the ability to actually protect your system and keep it from being infected with Worms, Trojans. Viruses, Rootkits, Hijackers, Password stealers, keystroke loggers, clickJacking, Drive-by-downloads, etc.,

It is even worse to have a product with a "high detection rate"/"high false positve rate", that detects everything under the sun, but then your system crashes and malfunctions because the "malware" detected and removed, was in fact NOT malware but programs and Windows components critical to system stability that were falsely "tagged".

1 Star certification is far from "marvellous"- almost bottom of the barrel... :shock:

Just in case this was aimed at me, I check regularly for what antivirus', firewall or a combo of both are regarded as the best. I don't rely by editors choices (web or print) as generally they're just paid to promote said product or just plain biased in a lot of cases. Instead, I ask IT network admins/friends in various companies is there anything better on the scene at the moment, etc. has such and such improved? I check in forums like this, where people are using the same system as me, and lastly, I have actually tried just about all the other antivirus' on various computers (some over 9 years old) and over the years I have come to a few general preferences as regards software. I used to favor norton, but = massive system resource hog + very intrusive and it didn't stop some nasty virus' from getting in, kaspersky was pretty good, but i kept getting some malware/viruses from time to time. Bitdefender was just as good.

but by far, the best IMHO and MANY others, easiest on system resources (both new and old), easy to use, non intrusive, feature packed and highly configureable is ESET. I'm in no way affiliated with them BTW. two years ago I would have said norton 200x all the way, but experience has proved that wrong. two years from now it could well be another program that does the job better.

Bitdefender is not very good.

and as for determining the best Always look at certified lab tests- dont go by "recommendations"
