How to play .wmv files on vista

New Member
I have visited countless other threads pertaining to this problem, have followed the advice to download the latest codec from microsoft but nothing, i repeat, nothing will get any wmv file to work. I just get this pop-up that declares i need to download a 'free license' to watch anything but from a highly suspect website (the security system screams at me not to!)

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Where did you get the windows media files from?
What website is it asking you to download the licence from? Sound like drm may be causing the problem not the codec.

Im getting the files from bittorrent sources, have no problems with any other files i.e. .avi ones.
The pop-up is a download from "acemix.net" and i just dont trust it, or certainly my computer doesnt. I also must admit i dont know what drm is!

Downloading from a bittorrant is always dodgey.
Dont do it.

it doesn't matter *what* it is - Don't do it.

There is more than enough free content on the web to keep anyone occupied for their entire lifetime *right now*.

can't play Music match which I downloaded from 3 ys ago and had all the CD's then, now I have donated them and appearently my rights also?

okay for one whats with the attitude??? and second i think i may have barged in on a conversation cause crossfit is a public webpage with personal videos of people working out and not a bitorrent.. check it out crossfit.com-- its not a downloader site

Torrent downloads are very dangerous....don't do it. Aside from legality issue, downloading using a torrent client is one easy way to get viruses, spyware etc.

Many torrent downloads are not real, and are scams & tricks to spread viruses. That popup is indicative of that fact.

Real WMV files will play on Vista with no problem as WMV is a native media format to windows. WMV = Windows Media Video.
