I was wondering if anyone could advise me on whic anti virus/internet protector would be the best to operate with vista. I have had a couple of issues with Mcafee and 'Kerpesky' not sure on the spelling.

Both programs installed ok but when it got to the registering online bit - they didn't recognise that I was online. On top of this I have to switch them off in order to receive or send my emails... not much point then, is there?

Any advise would be appreciated.
thanks

Avast works great with Vista. All you need to do is register on the site to get a key that lasts 14 months I think and then just register again when the key is about to expire.

Download FREE antivirus software - avast! Home Edition

The free and pro are the same so just get the free version so you don't have to spend any money.

Excellent advise - I have spent the best part of 2 days inside an Incredible Connection with a dude who installed that program on for me. The only hassle is that while it is on I can't access my email or internet. I have to right click and click 'stop on-access protection' before I am able to use either.

Another thing is that when I install new software ie Pastel - when it comes to registering, none of the programs sem to recognise that I am connected to the internet as they all say there is a problem and that I should check that I am connected to the net...?

Is there a setting or switch that I have on that I need to turn off or have you any suggestions on how I could sort this out?
thanks mate

Hello DJSGiles and a warm welcome to Vista Forums!!!

I have always used NOD32's AntiVirus from ESET or there SMART Security program, both of which work perfectly well with all versions of Vista.

In addition, I use SUPERAntiSpyware Professional, COMODO Internet Security (Firewall only not AV), COMODO BOClean, Ad-Aware Free Anniversary Edition, Spyware Blaster, a-squared Free and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Oh and I almost forgot, McAfee's SiteAdvisor addon aswell.

I use Mozilla Thunderbird for email and NOD32 integrates beautifully with it, Windows Mail, and Outlook etc.

Yes you could say my PC is well protected and by the way, it's super fast too. None of the abovementioned programs seem to slow my computer up in any way.

Please note, however, that I do not use Vista's UAC, I have the built-in Administrator Account enabled, and these are my choices only and there are other suitable AV programs on the market that will suit your needs and requirements I'm sure.

Hope this helps you and all the very best to you for 2009.

With Kindest Regards

Neil

Ooooh. NOD32 integrates with Thunderbird? Are we talking proxy server, or an actual plugin for Thunderbird?

Off to look into that... :)

To MrSMiley, bensegar, Techymike and Itwally,

cheers for the advise and direction. I'm using Avast at the moment.
BUT - I still have to right click on it and click on 'Stop-Acess Protection' before i am able to recieve/send mails or connect to the internet.

This happened with Mcafee and with Kerpsky(or something to that effect)
Can anyone give me advice on how to correct this?

thanks

Avast, works well and is free !

I also use a-squared for scanning downloaded files, this is an on-demand execution, not live...

BTW For your email problem, there is no reason why you should have no internet access when Avast is running... what error message do you get ?

You must have a firewall blocking Avast.
Especially relevant with Zonealarm, see here avast+zonealarm
Search their forum or post. Easiest way of fast solution. I only know of Zonealarm problems because they are old as dust.

Perhaps you have old AV/Firewall stuff not properly uninstalled?

Dear Itwally

Yes, NOD32 scans my Mozilla Thunderbird emails and no I don't use a Proxy Server, I use a direct LAN connection.

Go to Thunderbird Options - Privacy - and check "Allow anti-virus clients to quarantine individual incoming messages"

Kind Regards

Neil

Thanks again to all.
I've tried a number of the antivirus options
ALL of them are not allowing me to connect to my mail server
error message 'An error occurred with the POP3 mail server. Mail server mail.name.co.za responded'
and a similar one for when I connect to the net.

has anyone got any clue how i could sort this out please
