List of Compatible Antivirus Software For Vista x64

Hi guyz
i am a new user of Vista X64 platform and need help of senior users regarding which antivirus (Previously i was using Norton internet security 2007 in my 32 bit pc) would work better in the environment of vista x64.
Does NIS 2007 will work in vista x64 environment
 Pl help....Thanks in advance

Avast is the most complete free one - I use it and Windows Defender has never had anything to do. Gets my vote as the best - updates every 4 hours-it scans for rootkits, too. Check out the review and download link :

The free version of Avast is better than the free version of Avira for features. Forexample it checks web pages while you browse, but Avira only has that in its paid version.

On the other hand Avira consistently rates better for the number of viruses it catches. Avast misses a few.

I use Avira because I want a local scan to catch as many nasties as possible.

I had a look at that thread but didn't join the discussion because I don't know much about permissions. My experience is all on PCs with only one user, so I've never messed with ownership and permissions, except to take ownership of some system folders or files occasionally, to be allowed to modify them.

Thanks for the invitation though :)

I hope he can get out of this difficult predicament. I guess it should be possible without having to reinstall Windows, but I don't know how.

So you are looking for an AV program which has been compiled to run as a 64bit application. I don't know if any exist. Most 32 bit programs run well in Vista x64, for example Avira Antivir does everything it should on my x64 Vista.

In that case i think i sud use comodo and avast home edn

For pure x64 versions that I know there are Nod32 (I'm using it along with Comodo and never had a problem) and the new BitDefender 2009 has also a x64 version. Bitdefender has a free version but i don't know if it has a x64 version.

There are what are essentially 32 bit softwares, which have subsets which allow them to perform anti-virus tasks for 64 bit systems, are you sure sure the softwares you are talking about do not fit in to that class, which is radically different from an anti-virus package that is written top to bottom in 64 bit code.

Hi,

Avast and Comodo should work well - I think that's the combination Brink uses.


I use Avast and have found it excellent - I'm surprised you can get such a complete product free. I use the Windows Firewall successfully.

I also use Ccleaner - not just for regaining space , but he also clears all those tracking cookies - I run it before shutting down at the end of the day - takes a second or so.

Not sure you will actual x64 applications - but the ones you are thinking of are x64 compatible and excellent.

Oops... my bad. Nod32 Kernel is 32 bit, only the GUI is 64 :o.

As for Bitdefender 2009 I haven't tested yet, but I've seen that there are 2 diferent versions of it. But maybe it's the same thing that Nod32, not written top to bottom in 64 bit code as you said.

if you want one that runs in true 64 bit, then try comodo internet security. Their latest firewall has always been at the top & looks as if their antivirus will do the same.

its free, but the antivirus is still a beta while they sort the gui glitches.
