winrar and winzip in vista x64

hi there! I am using vista ultimate x64. I installed winrar and winzip and it's fine. just been wondering why i can't see the right click options of winrar and winzip. before when i am using winXP 32bit, if i right click on any compressed file supported by winzip and winrar there are options from where i can choose to extract the files in each folder or merged in one folder and now i can't find it in vista. why is that? vista doesn't support it?

Show us a picture of what you see when you click on "Context menu items..." because that is what tells us what you should see when you right-click on a file.

tnx for this mate! im not sure if i tick it but if i don't is there any chance i can tweak it in winrar options or winzip options? possible to just add them or i need to reinstall winrar or winzip to have that contect menu options?

I've read the other replies to your post, but none of them mentioned the fact that wjat you have weill not work, regardless of what options you set in each respective program. This is because you are running Windows Vista x64, and chances are your installations of WinRAR and WinZip are 32-bit. Vista x64 cannot use 32-bit Explorer Add-ons.

I'm not altogether sure about WinRAR (I don't use it because WinZip can deal with RAR files just as well), but if you want the context menus to appear in Vista x64, then you need to upgrade to WinZip 11.2, which includes x64 compatible context menu extensions.

I don't use WinZIP for the same reason that Peter does not use WinRAR, but I have WinRAR's context menu in both 32bit file managers (such as my default Xplorer2) and 64bit File managers (such as Windows Explorer and SpeedCommander).


After you install WinRAR, it will bring up a nice little menu that has several buttons on it, go ahead and configure what you want in terms of context menu items and file associations (just like in the screen shot that Axon provided) and then *close* that box.

Now, run WinRAR from the Start Menu and verify your options were stored correctly, and then open Explorer and see if the context menu works or not.

this is strange. i thought if my application is not 64bit capable it will not install. because there are some cases i tried installing some apps but the OS dont accept it. i am using winzip 8.1 btw and i am surprised it installed on my vista x64. but tnx for this info... i will look for that winzip version to see if it works. how about winrar? can you recommend which version? currently mine is version 3. tnx again.

that's awesome! but still there is no option like - extract to... extract each file to different folder... extract here... and so on and so on... those options i mentioned can be seen on winxp32bit installation of winrar and winzip. i hope i can have it too in vista x64. ;)

Umm, slightly incorrect. 16bit applications cannot work in 64bit OS, but 32bit apps can - but applications that also install *drivers* will not work because the drivers need to be 64bit and signed, a requirement of all Vista 64bit builds.

As I said, I run Vista x64 and I have them - you looked my my screen shot from Windows Explorer in Vista x64 straight off this computer - the shell extensions work in *both* 64bit file managers and 32bit file managers.

Do you see a single WinRAR item in the context menu at all? If not, then uninstall WinRAR and reboot, then make sure that it is removed completely from your system - reboot - install it again. Follow my instructions above, and make sure you are leaving the check mark next to Integrate WinRAR into Shell and Icons in context menu when it runs that menu for you after installing. Then, as I mentioned before, close that and then manually Run WinRAR, go to Options --> Settings --> Integration tab and make sure those boxes are still checked.

Have you tried the latest versions of WinRAR & WinZIP ??

Your problem is likely corrected in the newer versions - which will ship a 64bit shell integration library. As previously stated by others, this is the necessary step to getting those menu extensions in your Windows Explorer.

(Side-note: if you were to run the 32bit version of Explorer, which is also included with 64bit Vista, you will likely see those extensions!)

Otherwise, I would heavily recommend using the 64bit version of 7-Zip It is a powerful program, and can handle every ZIP & RAR file that I have ever thrown at it. Also, it is multithreaded quite well, so it will make the most of newer CPU's with multiple cores.

According to WinRAR download and support. WinRAR is a powerful Windows tool to compress and decompress zip, rar and many other formats: Knowledge Base

WinRAR works on 64 bit systems, but as 32 bit program.

Probably we\'ll make 64-bit (optimized) version of WinRAR in the future, but we do not know a concrete date yet.

Since version 3.50, WinRAR is able to integrate Windows context menus also on Windows x64 systems. (This did not work with previous versions).

Since version 3.70, WinRAR is also Vista compatible.

I would recommend either 7-ZIP or PeaZip (in terms of recommending Free / Open Source) as both have 64bit versions - but I would still recommend WinRAR over both as, though it is a shareware product, it is a one time fee - WinRAR download and support. WinRAR is a powerful Windows tool to compress and decompress zip, rar and many other formats: WinRAR - and it works natively in both 64bit file managers and 32bit file managers.

I registered it in Jan or Feb of 2002....still getting mine free.

I use a third party File manager called Xplorer^2 as my default FM - but sometimes I have to use Explorer / choose to use explorer because I want to accomplish a specific task. I can right click in *either* FM and use my WinRAR context menu to accomplish whatever I need to - extract archives, create archives, convert from ZIP to RAR, etc.

Yes.. so are 7-zip's. And there is no initial registration or purchase. ;) You just download, install, and use. Free software... Free updates.... No registration... Don't need to write down my serial number and keep it safe...

7-zip also has a plethora of shell-extensions...

So, it seems to be coming to nothing more than personal preference? I'm not trying to start a flame-war. I'm honestly curious as to what advantages is worth the money, even if it is only ~$30.

7 Zip 64 bi only works in 64bit FMs - Windows Explorer.

7-Zip only works in 32 bit File Managers - X^2.

WinRAR works in both - natively.

A lot of it is personal preference, and I normally support OSS over anything, but there are certain things I prefer to use programs that I know don't break. I currently have my WinRAR portable and with my keyfile I can create a PW protected file that authenticates itself upon extraction . testing because mine is a valid KeyFile.

Finally, I just like it better. It has less support for less types, but I have not run into more than 2 types of files since I first started using it back in the late 90s, Ace and one other I cannot remember.

Mind you my recommendation is not an expression of disapproval of 7-Zip - I have it installed and use it here and there (building Fx, extracting .XPI files) but I just prefer WinRAR.
