Vista's Defrag blows

I hate how they dumbed it down and took away the graphical progress thing. I didn't totally understand it, but I liked it. I liked that I could see how far along the defrag was. This time, I had to sit and watch the HDD LED until it stopped flashing.

Running it at 4 AM is useless to me, as I have the laptop in sleep mode at that time.

Fortunately, MS was "nice" enough to still allow us the DEFRAG command line that I guess will show the graphical progress. I guess that's how I'll have to do it from now on.

I wish MS would stop shafting power users just so the n00bs can feel more comfortable. Or maybe they could have n00b mode, intermediate mode and geek mode for users to choose from.

if you are a true power user you would buy a defrag program :) i have the new diskeeper 2008 and it works great

how does auslogics compare to diskeeper? any reviews proving it is faster?

Hi Hclarkjr,

I would imagine that DisKeeper and Auslogics Disk Defrag are probably about the same in speed. You will get more features with DisKeeper since it is a paid program. You might temporarily install Auslogics Disk Defrag and test to see how it compares. It will not cause problems, and uninstalls well. Just do not run them at the same time. (duh, haha)

Auslogics cannot defrag system files IIRC, and does not have the options that Diskeeper has. Aulogics is free, so that's a plus, but if you have important data on the drive, I'd go with a reliable solution like Diskeeper.

I downloaded Diskeeper (trial) a few days ago and tried the boot time defrag with Vista 64 bit (Service Pack 1) and it totally trashed my install. I could not recover and I had to do a complete re-install of Vista. What a pain! I am now using PerfectDisk 2008 and it works great, no problems at all, it has a great graphical interface and a boot time defrag that works!

For those that use the built in defragmenter, and want to adjust the timing on the defragmentation schedule, there is a neat little trick in the Task Scheduler in Vista - It allows you to set tasks to wake the computer up to perform them. I have successfully tried this option on another task that I want to run hourly - my computer will be all quiet and sleeping, and it will wake up on the hour, perform its task, and go back to sleep - all inside of 1 minute.

To enable this wake for task feature for the built in scheduled task for defragmenting:


  1. Open Task Scheduler
  2. Go to the bottom of the middle column, looking in Active Tasks - double click on ScheduledDefrag
  3. Click on ScheduledDefrag at the top
  4. In the far right column, click on properties.
  5. Go to the Conditions tab
  6. Check Wake the computer to perform this task
  7. Click OK
  8. Close Task Scheduler.

Voila. Now you don't have to worry about sleep / hibernation. As long as your laptop is not low on power, you're good to go - so *hint hint* don't leave your laptop unplugged at night.

i use O&O defrag its fast cool and it defragment also in the boot like the checkdisk moving all system files even i think the paging file, real cool and good for optimizations.

I personally won't use 3rd party defrag utilities anymore, both Diskeeper and PerfectDisk when they did their thing slowed down my system and it's performance, and the worst thing that happened when using Diskeeper, was that it messed up the master file tables on two of my harddrives.

I ended up backing up the data on both those drives, and reformatting them, just to get them straightened out.


I've got Vista's defrag utility set to go off once a week at 5PM local time and defrag my harddrives, it does this and other tasks, thanks to Live OneCare's tuneup schedule that I have set, to go off at this time. Initially Vista Defrag took awhile to defrag my harddrives, but now it does it's thing in under 5 minutes, because NTFS formatted harddrives don't frag as much as FAT32 formatted harddrives. NTFS formatted harddrives only need to be defragged once a week or once a month, not every day.
