wifi filesharing between pcs

hi

i have 2 pcs on my wifi network. one laptop (with password) one desktop(with no password)
i would like to share files on my desktop with my laptop. however i encounter a problem. i have set the drive on desktop as network shared etc. however when i try to connect to it using laptop it asks for password? but on my desktop i have no user/logon password. but each time i try to connect to it wont let me as requires password?

any help advice would be much appreciated

I think it's pubnlic folder sharing in the Network and Sharing control panel thing. Turn it on.

Or create a user, swame user/pass for the desktop and g like that.

i im not sure i explained correctly. When i map a network drive on my laptop. (linked to my desktop drive) it asks me for a password wich i dont have a bit like in the picture i got from google below.. What i meant is.. Is there a standard pass such as say admin i tried admin but no joy run-loginprompt.jpg

I believe that windows requires a password and won't let you log in over the network if you don't have one so try giving the account a password.

so i would need a user logon password on my desktop for it to work..
is there any way round that as i dont like a pass on my desktop that is why i never put one on. and would rather not have one on it if possible..

I don't believe that you have an alternative but I could be wrong.

You can set windows to auto login using the account.

That's how I do it.

It's under control userpasswords2 in the run cmd.

so is it because 2nd pc does not have a user pass then or do i need a seperate pass for the network share?

as i thought "assumed" it would be ok to have a user logon on laptop and no user logon on desktop. and a router with wep password inbetween them but still be able to share files without setting anymore passwords. simply the routers wep to connect each to the network and nothing else. did not think each pcs user logon (or lack of) would affect the share?

Vistas a handsome frog with some stuff.... And this is one of them.
I'd just set yourself up the same password as the laptop, then use the control thing to set it to not need a pass to log on,.

I've done it for years with no issues

yer im noticing that more. n more about vista. but like it for the most part just niggles.

so you suggest : create a user account on desktop same username and pass as user on laptop then use the auto logon feature to bypass needing a logon at startup. (is that right)
