how to connect share 2 pcs?

hi

i have laptop and pc and wonder can i connect or share files from one pc/laptop to another.. for instance if i have a file on my desktop and am sat in garden using laptop can i access the file on the desktop over the wifi nefwork and how would i achieve this? also would the desktop need to be turned on or in sleep etc thanks

just been setting up my router correctly had been running on wep? thought that was ok tilll about 10 mins ago... on wpa2 now supposedly thats better (more secure) is that correct?

after taking a brief look at that post it appears that aimed at ad hoc wifi sharing.. wich sounds great i had heard of ad hoc but knew little about its abilities. so very good info to have either way so firstly thankyou for the info
however i probably should of made clear in first post. i live in flats/appartments. and other users around me (as i see there router ssid when i connect to my router) would the ad hoc wifi connection be open to other unwanted users within signal range? if so using adhoc sharing is there a way to limit the share between just my 2 devices there by blocking any unwanted devices access.?

or if no then is there another option available to me in my set up :
(laptop - wifi router - pc)

that would offer more secure method of file transfer between the 2 systems across the network

Cant believe that this is becoming so difficult when it is so very easy
Go to dropbox. com and download some small free software
Then install the software on all the computers that need to share
Then your stuff is stored free in cyber space.
Anyone with the software, your password etc, can have access to the files
I use it not to share but for automatic back ups.
If I destroy my computer today, with any other computer I can get my stuff.

You do not need to creat an adhoc network. Put both on the same workgroup, not windows home, as alot of people do not change the name of thier network.

To do this go into control panel system.
Under compter name you will see workgroup. Change this to the same thing on both computers.
If you have a printer connected to one of the computers then you can turn this into a shared printer allowing both computers to use it.
Both computers will need to be turned on to access any files from the other.
No one else will see your network if they can not gain access to your router.

You will have to make the network private in your network setting for this to work and turn on file sharing.

If it is just you on your router then turn off password sharing. This is just my opinion as it makes things easier.

i have heard of drop box however i only want to share between 2 pcs in my home. and drop box is limited on free storage isnt it. basically all i want to do is use videos stored on laptop on desktop or vise versa instead of having 2 copies of the file. i thought i could just drag a file from 1 pc to the other use the file then delte it and still keep it on the 1st pc or just stream it from the pc in the other the room. or somethin simlar.

i have a whole lot of home movies on laptop and as i say want to be able to use them on my desktop in the other room without having two copies. taking up storage on both machines. drop box would solve this in a sense but would i not have to upload a duplicate copy of every file to the cloud storage. also i have a lot of files am unsure as to how much storage the dropbox is limited to and would take a long time to upload it all to the drop box around 300GB total when i already have the file on my pc. just thought there may be an easier way using the 2 pcs and wifi router already in place without adding hardware or software to the equasion...?

Did not know that you had that much stuff. I suggested it because I use it. Its a great back up, I cant lose my stuff.

sorry i prob should of included that in post. but principle i thought was the same for 1 file as for many so omitted it from origional post..

i used ad hoc to transfer earlier and had wpa2 pass key so does that mean its secure between the 2 pcs?

although i think i kind of fluked it not sure if i could repeat the process...? i mean the ad hoc connection is still set up. what i mean is i just i tried a few things and one worked but am unsure wich method of transfer.?

To access any file then you will need to make the whole drive a shared drive. You may still need the username and password to get into the other computer but that is easy enough.

ok thanks i do that by just right click slide down to share and so on is that right?

also when you say use pass word? i have user name and password on laptop but not on desktop do i just need the pass for the laptop? or do i need to create one for between the 2 machines.?
