Solved Modem On or Off during vacation

What do you guys do when not using your computer for extended periods of time? Shut Down and turn off modem, leave modem on? Curious about what the best option is?

Good question
A computer should be shut down at least once a week. During boot it repairs minor corruption, etc.
Other than that shut it down at night.
If you use it on and off during the day, go to sleep or hibernate.
Not in use for extended periods, shut it all down.

What about Modem power when away for an extended time?

"Help and Support" on my PC says that Shut Down is unnecessary: "Shut down your computer only when you need to install or repair hardware, such as installing a new hard disk or video card, or adding memory (RAM)."

I think you double linked the guide which advises use of a reg cleaner which you point out one should not use.

I disagree with your manual. A shut down a day keeps BSODs away.

All Windows computer will make minor repairs during boot.

For the record, I agree on the registry cleaners and optimizers. If it isn't broke why fix it? Seriously if you watch this site you will see many people who use registry cleaners and have to come here for help.

It is accepted knowledge by all those in the know that a computer should be shutdown from time to time, if for no other reason, but to save electricity.
Windows needs to be shut down, which is independent of the needs of the computer.

Seems that part of the shut down vs sleep or hibernate debate revolved around shutting down causing wear to your computer. But the wear concern seems to apply only to older machines. Thus, the debate becomes one of personal choice-- speed of use, electricity consumption, etc.

You say that shut down helps to make minor repairs to the system. Does restart serve the same purpose?

Hello, chiming in with my views. I would shut down . Storms cutting power off or some type electrical surge would be my concern. and i would feel better knowing everything was shut down .

I misspoke, its the boot up process that fixes minor corruption, sorry.
