internet slow compared to speed test

why is my internet so slow compared to the speeds reported by speedtest? speedtest reporting 24mps download and 3mps upload,computer specs amd 9100e 1.8 quad core 4 gigs of dr2 ram 500 gig hard drive 550watt power supply its a gateway dx4200 tower any help would be great and iam about 3 miles from the comcast hub give or take 500 feet
running vista 64 bit

Hello ls6camaro (again),

Well what speeds are you getting when you download things? It all depends on how fast the server is that you are downloading from :) For example, my download speed is about 2.5mb/s in SpeedTest, but I rarely get more than a 300kbps download from the internet.

i get give or take 500kbps 20mb for download and 2mb for upload but sometimes when i try to open web pages after i have say 15 open it slows way down and takes forever or just stalls and cant load period am i just taxing the cpu to much with that many pages open ( it is a quad core amd)

20MB/s download isn't bad at all! Are you wireless or wired? What browser are you using?

What signal type are you connecting with? ie 802.11 a/b/g/n?

Try connecting through an ethernet cable and see what the speeds do :)

802.11/n i have another gateway dx4200 on a wired connection and it is about 1.2 mb slower on the upload, it makes no sence that a wireless connection would be faster than wireless does it? but my wireless desktop and my wireless laptop which is about 10 years old are both faster than my wired desktop

Hmm, that doesn't make any sense :( Do you run some form of proxy/vpn? What AV do you have? What AV do the other computers have?

You know you are only as fast as the slowest part.

So as you get 500mbps, theres something between you and the d/l thats slow.

Speedtest is your best speed attainable usually. Go to somewhere like MS, and d/l a large file and see whats your speed.

I'm pretty sure the multi-open pages issue is your system puking out, not the speed, as speed has nothing to do with opening up pages.
