Can see any network in my neighborhood except my own... [Solved]
I was trying to help my neighbor yesterday and I have a couple of questions... Networking and I just don't seem to get along.
My neighbors changed to a new router because the AT&T tech told him that his router was no longer working. Anyways, he got a new Cisco/Linksys E2000 I think it is, I know is a Wireless N... I am not usually this stupid, I almost always get my facts straight and write them down, not today though.
His main computer is running Windows XP Pro w/SP3 and I got the router working fine, just like we had the other one, SSID & Router Name & Password, WPA/WPA2 Auto Channel, Mixed B-G-N... one problem solved.
Old Wireless laptop is also working again, had a little issue with dual names on the network but once we named the laptop differently, everything was fine.
He also have another desktop with Windows Vista, I have to assume is 32 bit and home because it is from one of those Dells or HPs or some name brand like that, forgot to check (again... sorry
). He also has one of those USB linksys wireless dongles (see image), I do believe is a Wireless-G because I remember seeing 54Mhz.
Anyways, I know the adapter is working fine because it is able to see other wireless networks close by, even one that is unsecured from another neighbor but, for some UnGodly reason, the adapter just doesn't want to see the router 6 feet away from it. Am I doing something wrong setting it up for this newer router? Do I need to perhaps install some type of software before attempting to make it see the network?
I know that the network Workgroup name in the PC is the same as the router name, etc, etc but still, I can't make the adapter see his router. I told him that he may need to get a compatible Vista adapter but then, it dawn on me... if it wasn't compatible with Vista, would I be able to see or get other networks to connect?
Before I make him spend money on something, I want to make sure that he needs it.
Thanks
