Formatted Computer cannot connect to internet?

My brother recently downloaded a virus on one of our other computers. I formatted it and reinstalled vista onto it. I set everything up and then i went to connect to interent and it wont work. i have an ethernet cable running from the router to the hard drive but it wont recognize the cable. the cable had no problems before i formatted it.

Do you get the network icon in notification area?
If so right click and go to network and sharing center
On the right side,view status,
In the box that opens click properties
Highlight,TCP/IPv4
Then,properties
Fill in the data with the info given to you by your ISP

Click on system.
Click on device manager.
Click on continue.
You are looking for any red crosses or yellow exclamation marks.
If there are any problems use the motherboard disk if it is home made otherwise download the driver for your Network Interface Card.

In doing some research on what's wrong with my computer connection after reformatting my computer. Everything worked before the reformat (though it was very slow). This laptop is connected to the wireless router, and internet is through a cable modem. I found this helpful thread. However, my screen is different from the one above & I can't find how to fix the connection, or what drivers (if any) I need:

I assume you're using cat5 for the connections.

Have you tried just powering the router off for a few minutes and then powering back up?

I did try disconnecting the router, but no luck.

Drivers--I suspect that I need them, but how can I find out what I need?

The modem & router appear to be working fine. What other information can I provide?

What happens when you go to the Control Panel , open up the Network and Sharing Center, and on left side of that, press the Diagnose and Repair ?

There are no drivers for the router, only firmware. You can do a router login and let it check for newer firmware.

The trouble shooting guide for my router has one power off the router and unplug it. Then upplug the cable modem. Shut down.

Next, start up the cable modem for a couple of minutes and, then, power up the router for a couple of minutes. Boot up.

When I click on Diagnosis and Repair, it tells me"
"The network adapter 'Realtek RTL8168/8111 Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.0)' is experiencing driver or hardware related issues"

Yes, but not sure what my network interface card is. Motherboard was replaced about a year ago and not sure I got a disk with it.

I downloaded this to a thumbdrive and took it to my other computer, but am not sure how to install. I try to open it or run as administrator, but "InstallIQ" won't allow me to complete the installation and says that I need to check my internet or firewall.

Go to Security Center and turn off Firewall . As you do not have internet, it can not be that.

Did you get the driver files on the Flashdrive or did you get the sites downloader file ? You need to get the driver files on the Flash drive, then open up the Flash drive and move onto the computer or if the Device Manager will do it from the Flash Drive . For example : In Device Manager, when you right click the network card and have it install from your computer , it should get it from where you put it ; documents, desktop, or pull it from the Flash Drive .
