Local Only persisting problem

I have an HP laptop and I often get the "local only" problem. I do not have a router, as I only connect to unsecured networks. Lately I have been connecting to my neighbor's router and sometimes it will work and I can surf the web, and more ofter it will only be local only. Sometimes while I'm on the web it will shift to local only and sometimes days on end, I cant get access to the web. Local only. It is very frustrating.

Can anybody help me out?

Hey Tom, thanks. Yeah I posted in the wrong forum at first. Sorry about the double post.

And yes, we've known each other for a while. I am allowed to be using it.

Is there anyway that I can fix it, so that I can consistently be connected to the internet?

Yes, I did everything in the guide. After I did it last night, it took me 3 connecting attempts but i eventually got internet access again for a couple hours, it didnt kick me off. However this morning, I attempted to connect roughly 10 times and every time I got local only.

Now, a few hours later...it took me four connect attempts to get internet access. I am connected now, but I dont know how long it will be before I get kicked off. So I dont think that the process you provided worked.

Should I do it again? or do you have any other methods?

Can you run a sfc /scannow scan for me please?

Follow this tutorial to find out how to go about doing this. Make sure you run command prompt as an administrator.

And can you upload the log file for me please? Do this by following the yellow box at the top.

Sure, I dont see a link for the tutorial sfc /scannow scan. I'm not too knowledgeable on these techniques and commands that you have me doing. So I will definitely need a tutorial. I will do a search to see if i can find it.

And which yellow box are you referring to, so that I can upload a log file (which I dont know what a log file is) ???

Also, does it matter which signal I'm connected with? Can I be at a library hotspot connected doing all these procedures and it still fix my problem at home?

Im currently running the sfc /scannow scan. However after it is complete, if i have to restart then there is a good chance I wont be able to get internet access again here for a while.

I will try to figure out to find/upload the LOG you were asking for Tom.

Is this the process for the LOG you want me to do Tom? and then upload like I did that other file yesterday?

A) For how,to see only the SFC scan details in the CBS.LOG:

Open a elevated command prompt.
Copy and paste the command below into the elevated command prompt and press Enter.
Code:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt
Close the elevated command prompt.
Click on the sfcdetails.txt file that was just placed on your desktop to see the SFC scan details (ones with the [SR] tags) in the CBS.LOG.
You can safely delete the sfcdetails.txt file afterwards if you like

After running sfc scannow scan, the result in the command box was:

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

It did not say anything about a restart. Now I will attempt to upload that LOG, by the procedure I posted above

I'm so sorry that I didn't supply a link with that tutorial, I've been quite busy over the last few weeks and it must have slipped my mind

Can you follow this for me please?

1. Open the start menu
2. In the search box, type Device Manager and click on it
3. Expand the Network Adapters category and right click on your wireless card, e.g. mine is Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection
4. Click on Uninstall
5. Restart your computer

Let me know how this goes!

I have 2 options under my network adapters and not sure which to uninstall. I don't want to mess anything up, but here are my two options:

Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN
NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller

Which one should I uninstall? And I'm not sure if I've just had a lucky day, but over the past 24 hours my local and internet connection has been stable.

Do it to both of them, it wont do any harm

Windows will detect the missing driver and reinstall it when you restart the computer.

Sounds good, lets hope that it isn't just luck

Hey, sorry for the lack of updates, but I was out of town and didnt have my laptop with me. However, when I left it seemed to finally be working. I was worried about when I got back.

But, so far so good. I'm not sure which actually solved it, but one of your methods seems to have worked. I am thankful! Hopefully it continues to work!
