Internet connected - unable to connect through other programs however

So, I've had this problem for a few months now. I can connect to the internet just fine, and can surf the web with no problems. However, when I try to connect to the internet through another source, like, say iTunes or Sony's ereader library, an error pops up telling me that "You are not connected to the internet. Please check your network settings and try again." During this time, the internet in the browser is working without a problem. I have Vista Home Premium 32bit. Thank you!

Sounds like something is blocking your connection
Lets start with a clean boot and try to find out what
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7
My guess would be the Firewall or AntiVirus

If that does not work
Run a full antivirus scan and download and run a full and updated malwarebytes.

If the above does not work, try in safe mode

If that does not work reset IE.

Proxy settings?

Make sure your settings are all correct. Time, region date etc
