Hi Guys
WIndows Vista Home Premium on a laptop with auto updating and running Avast antivirus.
It did an automatic Windows update on 3rd June. However, the computer, upon booting, now comes up with a variety of error messages....
Many programs (including Word) will not now run, and I can no longer access the net - wireless networks cannot be detected and even hard wiring to my router will not allow discovery.
Says that there are 'multiple security problems'; esp, that Firewall is not running. Clicking Fix Now has no effect. Trying to run FW has no effect, except to say that the FW service is not running, would I like to run it now? Click ok to find that the FW service will not load; various other Windows services will neither load nor run.
Avast is no longer 'able to secure the computer', etc. Have run full Malware, Virus Killer and Spyware progs, but they have found nothing out of place.
Tried to run Restore, but all the dates have been erased previous to 3 June. Running the earliest one on the 3 June results in error messages to say that Restore was unsuccessful. Same with any later Restore points.
Taken it to a repair shop -all they did was the same as me, and said it will require a factory reset to repair. I cannot believe that I need to do all this, reloading all the software etc and the major grief of all that.
Recently moved house, in rented accommodation so loads of stuff away in storage, so no easy access to my old OEM discs.
Help! Do I really need to reload Windows from scratch? Is there no Windows repair for an easier fix?
I'm comfortable with computers, but no programmer - so all advice in simple steps, please.
