Solved Slow internet speed on 1 port of ADSL modem?

Guys, i have ADSL broadband connection... ISP reports it to be of 4 Mbps.... i am using Thomson Speedtouch ST585 ADSL gateway... i am getting 1.47 Mbps on 1 port and 3.97 Mbps on rest of 3 ports... kindly help me out... why there is low speed on one port...speedtouch config page shows broadband line speed of 4.7 Mbps......

I have tried connecting my ethernet wire to rest of the modem ports but issue remains the same with my PC.

-Speedtest.net [1.48 Mbps download, 0.34 Mbps upload, ping 30 ms]
-AV [Avira Free Edition - updated]
-performed malware system-scan using updated Ad-Aware which removed around 10 cookies and 1 adware.

I have just updated my Realtek PCI-E Gigabit NIC driver but no improvement.

So it's just one Ethernet port and you've applied the same cable to each port with the same set of circumstances?

This sounds like a hardware fault with the router, I would contact your router manufacturer or who ever gave you the router and report the problem; maybe ask for a new router.

I have a similar problem with some USB hubs and that's just due to poor wiring inside the device but for 50p, I won't complain.

A design flaw/ wiring fault is probably the problem.

I repeat again, i dont have a problem with any particular ethernet port. The problem is to whichever port I connect my PC to, i get a speed of 1.47 Mbps while other users of modem are getting 3.97 Mbps in all of the ports. There is something wrong with my PC maybe.

First and foremost please completely fill out your System Specs as much as possible so we know what we're dealing with, once we have this information we can recommend solutions such as driver updates etc.

Oh and the 4.7Mb/s line speed you have been told is 4.7 in practice you can only get 80-90% of that, so your line is fine.

See if installing the most recent driver for your ethernet changes anything.

Done installing the new driver.. no improvement on speed!

As you have assembled this PC yourself make sure there is no short circuiting or bad connections.

Try transferring something over your network and see how long that takes and what its transfer is.

If you have another form if installed network card (or use one lying around) then try that (WiFi etc.).

I connected my notebook PC to the same ethernet port of modem, and like other PCs on network, i am getting 4.04 Mbps downspeed.

This ensures that there is something wrong with my desktop on-board NIC. If so, I shall have to buy a new PCI NIC for my desktop. I am wondering my desktop is hardly 1 year old and if there is something wrong with NIC, then why is it still functioning at 1.5 Mbps??:huh:

If that component is still within warranty you may want to contact the manufacturer.

To check to see if this is a fault with Windows you may want to consider using a Linux Live CD (Main Page - Linux Mint) which you just boot into and go to speedtest.net on and see what the result there is.

To create a live CD download the ISO/Disk Imagge from the website.

Burn it to a disk using MagicISO

Boot into the disk and choose to run it as a live CD without installing it.

thanx buddy.... well i got 4 Mbps on my desktop too... formatted system partition and re-installed Windows. that solved the problem.
