ipconfig release/renew not working

I am trying to connect via cable modem after being connected to DSL; when I release / renew it assigns DSL address; I've released then rebooted PC and same occurs. Have also reset adapter, turned modem off/on with the 169.x.x.x address but renew continues to capture old address.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Right-click on your adapter in Network Connections, click on Internet Protocol Version x, click on Properties, Advanced, and make sure that Obtain an IP address automatically, and Obtain DNS server address automatically is checked. Do this for each protocol.

If they are already in both, try uninstalling the adapter, rebooting, and letting Windows reinstall it.
