windows cannot find http:// etc

running Vista OS 32 bit on hp pavilion laptop. Began getting the error msg about a month ago when I try to connect to Internet ... sometimes it connects, most times not. I've run two different AV pgms plus malware pgm, but to no avail; problem still persists. Thanks for your help. agfox35

are you running two anti virus programs?
If so that may be the problem.

Thanks for responding Kenny. No, only running one av pgm. The second one is on my HD but inactive. I activated it to run the system thru another av pgm as a desperate measure and deactivated it when the scan was finished. Joe

are you still having trouble?
have you tried flush dns
or release and renew your ip address?

PS: did this machine have a trial version of norton or McAfee on it?

thanks for the urls that I was able to access w/o problems. I did flush dns and that seems to have resolved the problem. Inasmuch as the problem began about a month or so ago, I searched for pgms that I d'loaded in that time frame and deleted them: The Ask Toolbar was one, Norton [an OEM 'bonus' was the other], but could not uninstall The Weather channel due to "cannot open install.log file" error msg. I'm working on that. I appreciate your help. Joe

The norton (as I suspected) causes alot of problems, that most people don't know about (and norton certainly don't tell about) try downloading and running the norton removal tool. Download and run the Norton Removal Tool

as for the weather bug. stop it from starting up.start > (type) run > select run from the list (you may have to click ok to a uac prompt)

type msconfig go to startup tab, and take the check out of the weatherbug (so it wont start)

While your there uncheck any other annoying things that auto start. (I have two boxes checked. (avg and microsoft operating system) the more you uncheck the faster your system starts and runs!!
