Vista Network Speed Slows over time

I asked for help with this problem once before and did not get a fix --- so I am trying again ...

Problem is network bandwidth as measured by the speed test(s) will decrease over time without any changes being made -- it does not matter what time of day either.

It is a Vista PC running SP2 and hard wired to a Linksys router ( Wireless-G model ) and I am a Comcast customer with 30mbps service. Maybe I should mention this PC sits idle for most of the day before the family comes home from school. All of the XP systems in the house do NOT have this problem.

As you can see over the course of 5 days the download speed drops into the 2-3 mbps range ( and the upload speeds are greater than the download speeds !! )

The 12mbps measurement was taken after the reboot.

The only fix I have found is rebooting the machine :mad:--- then performance is as expected for a day or so before it starts to drop again.

Any and all suggestions welcome ( short of upgrading to Windows 7 --- :D)

can you do me a favor go to start>search>type cmd> rype ipconfig /all and use the built in snipping tool (type snipping in search) to make a screenshot and upload it to us

Are you getting any network activity while the machine is a idle? ie led's blinking really fast.

The only LEDs blinking on on the router -- I suspect there is failry constant "handshaking" going on with the home network / router causing this (?)

Okay. Hmm. Does the vista machine have a firewall or a bandwidth consuming program running?

Have you updated the network interface driver? Maybe that's the root cause. Whats the pc manufacturer and model number of the pc? ie HP Pavilion dv4

Yes -- Marvell Yukon that came with my Lenovo 9120-CTO -- this was one of the first things I tried. Somebody mentioned looking for programs that consume bandwidth -- any idea what these might be ? I havethe same things running on XP with the exception of Windows Live Messenger, Zone Alarm, and maybe one other.

BTW -- I hae also tried the netsh commands I found posted on the web for the TCPIP stack issues w/o any results either.

Bandwidth consuming programs like uTorrent, frostwire, or any other P2P software. Try re-enabling the vista firewall and see if that changes the results :)

No P2P or other software like that is on the machine -- I forbid it.

Will try the Vista firewall vs Zonealarm and see if things change.

This problem is driving me nuts ! :cry:

On an afterthought, I checked to see if another network card driver had come out -- it did 10/05/2009 date ! So maybe -- just maybe .....:zip:

Could be that. But 3rd party firewalls are known not to play well with Vista...

3rd party firewalls may not "play" well with Vista, but are they known to suck network bandwidth away over time like this ? Ithink its something else and praying the latest driver cures my ills.

I also dont t hink its a firewall issue. I havent read this entire thread but Im feeling like its either ISP capping, or something like IPv6.

Ok using your download chart I noticed your fastest DL, also had your quickest ping time. your slowest download also had your highest ping time. My gut feeling is that the first device on the ISP's network (their router maybe) is having porblems with something in your setup.

Just in order to resolve what, you can get a free 3rd party app called ping-probe. Its located here Ping-Probe (Essential Network Toolkit Suite). what you can do is run trace route to say msn.com, or whatever. It will ID the device that is slow to respond. It will even tell you if your router/modem is slow to respond (very possible). after several runs trace will give you the info to find out what device is causing the slow down

Thats step one

I noticed the corresponding increase in latency ( ping ) time to the degraded speeds as well.

I will try perform this. What is confusing me is that their are 3 XP machines in the network without this problem being served by the same ISP through my router (?). Unless the ISP network is treating the Vista machine differently.

The IP V6 "angle" also intrigues me -- maybe a compatibility issue with my router or how it functions within Vista ?

IM thinking IPv6. its been shown to cause random drops, slow downs, and is just a headache. It only used if you using homegroup instead of a workgroup.

You should try disabling IPv6 first

How do I go about doing this -- by removing it from the network adapter protocols in use ? Or is their another method to make sure IP V6 is disabled ?
