Can't connect using my D-Link DIR-655

I recently bought a new Dell Studio XPS 435 with Window Vista x64. I can't connect to the internet using my existing DIR-655 router. Have my old desktop (Win XP) still connected and two wireless laptops and they have no problem.

I have spoken to Dell, my ISP and tried D-Link with no success. I have updated the driver for my network card, updated the firmware on the router and have changed cables as well. It will connect when I bypass the router and go direct to the modem but not through the router. It appears that the problem is with the router but have run out of things to try.

I sure would appreciate any suggestion on what the problem might be. Thanks.

do you have mac address on in router? could this be a firewall issue? could we get more info on your setup and networking

since you are off line Im going to add something to try when you come back. goto search and type device manager. look in decive manager to see if your network cards (wifi, and wired?) are there. Are there any "unknown devices" with yellow triangles on them?

Thanks for your quick response. I checked the network card which is wired and there are no yellow triangles there...it says is working properly which it does when I connect it directly to my satellite modem.

I must warn you that I am somewhat challenged when it comes to router....know only the very basics so bear with me. Logged onto it and it does have a mac address under the LAN settings and it also is DHCP Server enabled...if that helps.

My network card is a Intel 82567LF-2 Gigabit card. The light on the back is on as well. My ISP does not require login and when I connect my ethernet cable to the modem direct my computer finds the connection on it's own. I have also tried removing all other connections in the router except this new computer and then have rebooted the modem, the router and the computer and still nothing. According to the D-Link site this router should be compatible with my Vista.

Sorry but I forgot to mention that I did turn off the Windows firewall and then tried to connect and no go. I don't get any messages saying that it is blocking anything.

I know a lot of people who bought the D-link routers and have encountered the same problem as you have described. From what can gather is that all most all switched to a different brand of routers to (Linksys) and where able to connect. It could be a bad router or router is going bad. I know this not much help to your situation but try switching out the router for a new one, same brand and see if that gets you up and running, if not try a different brand.

Hi DonnaA,

Have you tried to ping your router?
In case you don't know how to do that:

1. Enter cmd mode.
2. Type "ping 192.168.0.1" (without the quotes. This should be the D-link router address.)
3. Press ENTER.
4. You should see 4 responses if the ping works.

If the ping doesn't work properly, you can use it to troubleshoot your problem.
