no. When i open network on the vista machine it shows my router and the Vista machine. It sometimes shows a connection to my XP machine and sometimes it doesn't. the network name is the same on the both machines. I just can't figure out why it doesn't show the connection to XP all the time. I share some files between to 2 machines. The XP machine connects and shows the Vista machine all the time. I can ping the XP machine.

What you're looking at is called the browse list. Does the XP box eventually appear in the browse list on the Vista side, even if you have to wait for say 15 minutes?
That type of "browsing" is a throwback to old, old NetBIOS-based networking and one of its quirks is the fact that it doesn't always happen instantaneously across the entire network. Even a single domain/workgroup network segment can take up to 15 minutes to stabilise, given default settings, and from memory it can theoretically take 48 minutes for a multi-segment/multi-domain browse list to be fully populated and distributed across the network.
Otherwise, if waiting doesn't help, there's something else going on.

I tried this and it didn't work even after an hour. I had a belkin N150 router and didn't have this problem. I changed and bought a better belkin N+ router and that's when the problem started. I am beginning to think the problem is the router. any suggestions??
