Local Only connection problem

Hello everyone.

From time to time, specially when I`m doing heavy uploads or heavy downloads my connection goes from full internet to "Local Only" or "Limited Connectivity". Thus, all internet access is lost until I reset the connection (disconnect and connect again). When the connection is reset, the problem is solved and the issue is fixed, that is, until it happens again a few hours or days later.

I`ve found out that this is quite an usual problem for all Vista users, most of my friends have this same problem and I`ve seen hundreads of posts in the internet about it, but no solutions were found.

I`m running Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit on a HP dv7-1245dx notebook. I have another PC which also runs Vista 64bit, two notebooks and a PC that run WinXP.

From all of these machines, only the ones running Vista are affected, I do not have this problem with the machines running WinXP. All machines are wireless (connected through WIFI) but the PC running WinXP. I`ll use my main notebook as the scenario for troubleshooting.

DHCP is enabled in my router, all machines receive their IPs and DNS without problems. My router`s firmware and all drivers are up-to-date, including Windows. I`ve run Microsoft`s router diagnostic tool and it passed all tests. My router`s firewall is disabled and so is Window`s firewall. I`m currently using Avira Antivir. Before, when I used Kaspersky I had the impression that this problem was much more frequent (Kaspersky listens on all in traffic)... but I might be mistaken.

I`ve already tried disabling IPV6, automatic network discovery and others, none worked. I`ve also tried setting my IPv4 and DNS ips static and that also didn`t do the trick. I did not try a common method of disabling a DHCP packet flag in the registry because I am aware that my router fully implements and is proof-tested on DHCP and all machines in my LAN are correctly assigned their IPs, thus that should not be the problem.

PS: I do not mean to be rude or cocky but I wish to keep this thread clean. Please disregard posting if you haven`t read the entire post. Do not post things like "Keep resetting your connection, that`s the fix!" because that is not a fix, it is a simple bypass around a bigger, unknown problem. I use this notebook on VNC a lot (I dont like taking it to some places of my town) and sometimes I just cant do it because the connection went Local Only, thus I can`t access it from the outside world (internet) and fix the problem if I`m not home.

PS2: To those who have read it this far, thank you for your time reading about my problem and for your future contribution. All ideas are welcome!

Hello necr0potenc3,

This worked for me but does not seem to apply to all. I disabled IPv6 at my network connection then I set up a connection to my router using the MAC address. I have copied this arrangement for two laptops and 2 desktops non of which have this problem now.

Yup, done all that, it`s further down in my first post. Except disabling sharing, that`s a no-no in my network.

I get the wonderful advice of rebooting my router... =P

Does anyone know *why* this problem happens? It seems I`m far from the being the only one with it, aren`t there any statements from Microsoft? I couldn`t find anything in their website.

Pieter, I believe that solution does not apply to me due to:

1 - My router has succesfully assigned an IP to my network card (You can see that in the ipconfig settings I`ve given in my first post and you can also see it in my router`s client table)
2 - That registry-key-changing-hack is actually due to the fact that windows vista is not very friendly with non-standard-compliant routers. My router is 100% compliant, I`ve used Microsoft`s router testing tool to check that.



No one has a definitive solution yet? =(

I'm waiting to see a good workable solution instead of a workaround reply to this issue as well. Using Vista Home Pemium 64 bit and trying to stay connected to a AT&T UVerse 2wire Residential Gateway is really frustrating the daylights right out of me. The gateway was swapped out for a new one and the problem persists but usually only with the 64 bit OS. 32 bit Vista and XP don't seem to have the same problem - at least not as frequently.

This afternoon I met an other weird problem:
during data transfer from a NAS to the laptop (OS Vista) the Internet access got blocked. Also Internet access for an other laptop (W-XP pro) at the same network was blocked. After the transfer from NAS to laptop was finished, Internet access was possible again.
searching on some forums I found for this specific problem the solution: the LAN-network in Vista was assigned as a Public Network. After changing to Privat or Home (in the Dutch version is it called 'particulier netwerk') the problem was gone.


Maybe will this be helpful for your problem...

I have never used home premium so I don't really know the issue from that perspective, Just one question though,
I had this same problem when i first installed Vista Ultimate 64 - in the end i went back to XP for a while until SP1 was released, which seemed to fix the issue for me, so my question is, is your computer up to date with all patches etc?
with SP2 just around the corner that may have the relevant fixes for you.

Sorry - missed that part I guess - just finished work when I read through this, as I said SP1 fixed my problem with the same issue - but this might help you

Rerun201, I was having a terrible problem with the 2Wire 802.11g wireless adapter running on Vista 32-bit, constantly unplugging, or having to uninstall/reinstall, or resetting the gateway, only to lose the connection again. On another forum I saw a suggestion that there is a driver conflict with an ITunes app called Bouquet. I went into the MS Config file through Control Panel, disabled Bouquet, rebooted the PC, and have had no problem since.
