Transfers Start Really Fast, Then Slow Down

Why do transfers start really fast, then slow down in a few seconds. It's something I have always wanted to know but cannot find an answer.

Downloading from the net and file transfers on the PC. It's always the same.

Depends on size and number of files. It could be the site is sharing bandwidth.

I'm talking from folder to folder or computer to computer as well as internet downloads.

It does not do it in a ridiculous fashion but does it to all of us.
