Networked computers work but don't show up in network folder

Hello all --

I am networking Vista and XP. Everything seems to be working EXCEPT the XP computer does not show up in in the Vista network folder.

I can access the XP computer by entering \\computername in the "start search" box, after which I see all the XP shared files and can access the files as expected.

When I run the "map complete network" function, the network map is correct and shows the switch, XP computer, and Vista computer.

The XP side works 100%

The only problem is that on the Vista side when you open an explorer window and click on Network, the XP computer doesn't show up.

For purposes of debugging, both firewalls are off. Authentication is set to NTLMv1 level, and the XP LLTD patch has been applied.

Any advice is appreciated.

in the map can you see and click on your xp?

I can see the XP machine in the map, and it is in the correct place. If I hover over the computer icon, I can see the XP computer name, IPv4 address and MAC address, however the icon is not clickable. By not clickable, I mean that the cursor doesn't change shape when I am over it, and nothing happens when I click in any fashion. (Right, left, single or double.) The Vista machine itself and the router are both clickable in the map, and the switch and the XP machine are not clickable.

As before, entering \\computername (where computername is the name of my xp computer) in the "start search" box works, and the explorer window that is launched by that command has all my XP shared directories. File sharing works fine in that one explorer window.

Yes --

Try entering \\xpmachine in the 'start search' at the bottom when you click the start button in the lower left in Vista. (substitute the actual name of your computer for xpmachine of course)

On mine, it opens an explorer window that shows all of the xp shares, and I CAN access the files as expected. The funny thing is that even in that explorer window, the xp machine will not show up in the file structure under "network"

i get an error code 0x80070035 "the network path was not found" mabey i don't have my network setup right are both of your computers wired?

i don't know why it would be any different with me my laptop is wireless and my desktop (the xp) is the one connected to the router and the modem is connected to the router as well

I haven't read all the posts so you may have already done this. Make sure that netbios is enabled over tcpip for both computers. When I disabled mine, I got the error message you describe. Also, use ipconfig on both computers to see what address they each have, and make sure that each can ping the other.

Okay folks, I figured out how to fix this. If you have the following symptoms see the end of the email:

When I run the "map complete network" function, the network map is correct and shows the switch, XP computer, and Vista computer.

The only problem is that on the Vista side when you open an explorer window and click on Network, the XP computer doesn't show up.

For purposes of debugging, both firewalls are off. Authentication is set to NTLMv1 level, and the XP LLTD patch has been applied.

In addition the symptoms above, the command "net show" showed only the Vista machine when run from either the Vista or the XP machine.

The problem was on the XP machine even though this machine had been working correctly on a previous home network. The following instructions are all done on the XP machine. The fix was to turn off all of the shares on the folders, and then go the the control panel and remove "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" from the Network Connection Properties. After doing that, reboot the computer. Next, go into the control panel and add the "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" back in. After that, reboot and then add the folder shares back. Problem solved in my case.

Hi All,

I was also facing the same problem. The thing is that the XP computer will not show till the connection has been made securely and is strong enough. Go to network connection and sharing center. If you see the warning sign on connection then try to diagnose and repair the problem.

Also once a connection has been made apply security settings for Home or any other type of network on wireless connection.

One more thing ( but i am not sure about it) if you have ICS set on the connection then you may not see XP in Vista. After setting ICS on Vista i was getting only internet gateway interfce in map(not the XP laptop).

it sounds like you are talking about a wifi connection which i don't have on the xp the xp is wired to the router and the vista is wireless

Have you told the router about the wireless connections, do you have to register the connections?
When you are on the router main page can it see both computers?
Is there a firewall on the router stopping netbios or some other service?

im really sorry but pretty much all that i understood of that was can i see them both on the router main page and yes i can all the other stuff i have no idea what it means except for the firewall and i don't know how to find that

Howdy Ya'll
I'm having about the same problem, XP & Vista HP 64bit, XP sees Vista with full access, Vista list the XP pc but tells me I have the name spelled wrong( But it isn't) I used Dave's cure of removing the shares and resetting them above to get it this far ( Thanks Dave) but now I'm stuck again. Any ideas?
Any suggestions?
