Standard VGA graphic card...driver update?

My GeForce NVidia card was damaged which resulted in crushing and BSOD's. Now I am stuck on Standard VGA with a driver 2008 release date. With it as my graphic card, I have no crushing and no BSOD although successful re-booting is not automatic. I often need multiple tries for successful start. Video games are not well supported (even solitaire is slow). And I can no longer use Media Center and Quickplay.

I am wondering if there are more recent VGA Standard driver updates that might improve boots and video performance .

BTW, what is Hardware accelaration that might be turned off at the moment. Where do I turn it on if it's actually off?

You are on generic microsoft drivers and unless your nvidia can take drivers, I believe youre stuck with the '08 ones.

Hardware acceleration I don't think can be actiuvated due to the generic drivers..

In device manager NVidia display adapter has three drivers, one dated 2013...alas my damaged GeForce 9600M GT after five glorious years of impeccable performance is now obviously incapable of taking driver.

Is my boot/start problem really due to damaged NVidia card? Or there is something else wrong?
Is there any update or repair measure to improve boots/re-starts? (It's really unsettling to be obligated to re-start after some updates).

If your video card is damaged (I don't know how you know that), then you're probably running on the integrated graphics. However, that doesn't explain why you're having problems booting and why you can't run media player.

If you remove the graphics card from the system, do you have the same problems?

A professional PC repairman made the diagnosis and did not advise repairing or replacing the graphic card. His other advice was to just buy a new laptop for a few dollars more than the cost of repair/replacement. He further explained that most Graphic card repair/replacemt jobs are not reliable and problems are likely to recur in no time at all...something to do about the badly designed ventilation system at the MOBO area where the card is on top of.

I can play Media Player perfectly. What I cannot play is Media Center to watch live TV shows. I can still watch with no problem missed full episodes...but I think they use flash player. I also can watch web video streams.

I just cannot watch live TV and play fast games...Standard AVG has less than 60 GB to support these stuffs.

No...I do not know how to remove any integrated parts. The repairman knows but does not want to do it..."too much work," he said.

I need to talk to him about the booting problem...but he just left town on his honeymoon for six weeks.

On a laptop, the drivers should only come from the vendors (HP in your case) support website. Is that what you're using or did you get the drivers from NVIDIA. I'm not buying what the repairman said about the ventilation since the system was designed for that chipset. It would be a ventilation problem if the grids in the bottom (intake) or back side (exhaust) of the notebook are partially clogged. It could also be that the case fans are dirty.

What is "standard avg"?

AVG was a typo. I meant VGA.

The drivers and driver updates for NVidia are from NVidia but the first one is also available in HP website.

There was a class action lawsuit against NVidia and PC manufactures(DELL, Acer and HP) HP, being on Pavilion dv6 and dv9 series (but not dv7... which is my laptop) which NVidia settled out of court in 2008. NVidia admitted to fault in that ventilation stuff design that resulted in overheating and graphic card/MoBo damage.

The only good news I heard from the honeymooning repairman was that my laptop was very dust-free clean...which did not surprise me because I routinely clean it with both vacuum and compressed air. Also, my laptop never heats up, never mind overheating.

Media Center cannot be set up with Standard VGA graphic card to receive signal from digital TV tuner. Standard VGA cannot support it.

I think you should reinstall the driver from HP and see if there is any change.

I did already....and the other two also hoping one of them might solve the probs. But apparently a damaged card cannot be undamaged by any driver.

The only way I can be without crushings and BSOD's is by skipping NVidia card and just settle for Standard VGA...and do not re-boot or re-start unless required by some updates or software installations.

Right now, this old Pavilion dv7 looks and behaves as normal as the first day it arrived 5 yrs ago...albeit sans NVidia to enable Media Center and 3D games. I have not re-booted in 4 days, though. Only God knows what will happen when re-starting needs to be done. Good grief!
