Can't install video card

I aquired a laptop that I'm fixing it up.
It's Compaq CQ50-115NR. No disks can with it, I had my copy of Vista Ultimate and the laptop says Vista Home premium on the bottom.

I managed to get the OS installed after many tries, but it will not let me install the video card - also no admin account - users and locel groups has the red circle X.

I can order a recovery CD etc but I don't have a clue what is on it and if it will help with this.

Someone had formatted it and the recovery partition was gone :(

I'm not to Vista OS proficient, you may have issues using the Ultimate disk and the compaq home key... Alot of prebuilts are picky like that.
As you have a key, why don't you "'aquire" a home dvd from somewhere and reinstall it like that...

And you did get the newest 8200m drivers from nvidia site?

I would love to 'aquire' a home version disk, but I don't know anyone who has one :(
I have a friend with a Toshiba laptop and they have the disk....Vista Home Premium, but it's for a Toshiba :(

Yes I did get the drivers, but I need to get the OS up and running good ;)

A friend had the Vista Home Premium and let me borrow it, I used the numbers from the bottom of the laptop and it went on flawlessly - but now it won't take the drivers I got from Compaq for the CQ50-115NR :(

I googled this laptop for drivers and they all say for XP :(

I had found these drivers and the laptop refused to take them, I tried and tried.

BUT....

The friend who sent this laptop to me, ordered this driver disk from here

This worked flawlessly and I didn't do anything else to the machine. So something is very different between the Compaq site and this one.

Needless to say, I have this saved in several places even on 2 externals as well as burned to CDs ;)

I never want to lose this copy ;)

From US - I meant the drivers worked perfect from that site, it wouldn't accept the drivers from Compaq. But could this be something wrong with the laptop?
Before I got it I found out so many different attempts were made to get it running, mostly different XP OS's.
I just wish it could run XP Pro, be so much easier.

If you search very well, you might find the appropriate drivers from the manufactuers.

But its a tedious chore.

Thank you for all your help.

Now it's decided not to let me download and install anything apart from firefox, that went okay.

I've tried 3 anti virus programs and each says corrupt file, I then tried them from the files from my main PC, tested and working - still says corrupt files.

Even BelArc won't install, which is most unusual.

At this rate it might be going in the bin :(
