Display blacks out then reappears when I close then open my laptop lid

I have an inconvenience that is slowly turning into a problem. At odd times, my screen blacks out. I could be typing, playing games, or whatever. I haven't been able to recreate the problem. I'm getting instruction from HP now. I'm told to update my 965 chipset (I think that's display), update my BIOS, and update NVIDIA driver. When I update any drivers, I'm told, by the computer, that the installation was unsuccessful and that I should try again. 3 times is enough in my book. I have updated my BIOS and that turned out to by fruitless. I try to pinpoint the event in my event viewer, thinking this will help me, and I find I don't know the TYPE of event this is. I'm searching the net for the type of event I'm having. I have also turned off my UAC because I read that it sometimes interferes with the display, but only when the UAC window is up. Long shot, I know, but I'm willing to try anything at this point.

Any ideas?

id say its hardware fault rather than software. if you have no other problems such as image/video distortion when viewed/played, and no problems when your gaming (other than your screen), its not your GPU.

when you say it blacks out, does it look like it has lost all power, or does it just look like it isnt not displaying anything( in other words, is it back-lit). ive had that problem twice before and found the screens power connector was half way out of its socket on the motherboard..

  • another sign that the connector has come loose is if you get flickering when you rock the screen back and forward.

how often does it happen?

there is usually a minibutton, or something that u press and the screen blacks out but is still back lit. this is usually installed so when you close the lid without turning off computer, the screen blacks out to save power.

Thanks for responding. The screens actually blacks out. Not even backlit. I'm sure it's probably a hardware problem, but when I check the device manager, all is fine. My power settings are mostly for battery use and I checked those settings too. If it went out at regular intervals, I'd suspect that, but it doesn't. And I'd like to see me checking the motherboard of this laptop, but I'm too skeered to open it. My only computer, ya know.

i would take it to a repair centre rather than doing it yourself. unless you know what you're doing and have the necessary tools for computer maintenance.

did you check your power profile? set turn off display to never , could have been a bug there
