4870 2GB or 4890 1GB

I will buy a new graphic card especially for high end gaming 1920x1080p,full AA,full everything!!(crysis 2 etc),so i need some expert :geek:

opinion

SAPPHIRE VAPOR-X HD 4870 2GB GDDR5 PCI-E
OR

Hello panais,
If it was me i would go for the 4890, faster clock speeds all around, i know the other one has more inboard memory but the 4890 floats my boat.
Thats just my personal view.
Of course DX11 is just around the corner, another thing to think about.

And why is that?

it is always nice to have the extra ram for video, also as games are getting better, the makers of games are starting to utilize all the memory on the cards, and as time progresses you might need a 2 gig card to play some games.

personally i run the 4670HD 1 GB card and have no issue's yes the clock speeds are slower but still have no problems with any thing.

one last thing, i also like the way they have the cooling setup for that card, if you are a hard core gamer it should stay really cool.

yes it is built in to the catalyst software, my 4670 has it also.

no he means dx11 :D the new HD5000 series cards will be out in October if i was you i'd wait and get one of those :D if you don't want to wait i'd get the 4890 because once you get past 1gig of memory.... thats the point where it doesn't matter anymore

the 4890 is only 10 percent faster so basically its almost the same card. get the 4870 2 GB man just do it.

Go for the 4890 the faster clock speeds with the die shrink to 45nm has helped it to stay cooler (better for O.C.) and you dont need more GDDRam for a FPS like crysis 2, but If I were you, WAIT because DX11 VGA's are coming out October/November, so go for one of those, they will blow the competition out of the water (ATI will) Nvidia is screwed (cant get the die shrink) and they pursued the wrong technology (similar to larrabee)

Actually thats wrong. RAM on a graphics card gives it more space to buffer game data so it takes stress of your normal RAM trust me 2GB always gives better performance. also simply by overclocking the 4870 just a little bit you can get the same performance.

ok here are the benchmarks from the two cards.......... the 4890 gets at least 10fps more than the 4870 and when you get to the point of using the gig of ram on the card it moves over to the system ram....

well ok...... but if you have to overclock to get the same preformance from a stock card that can overclock the gpu to 1ghz easily......... there isn't much point in getter the slower card...... 1gb ram on a card will not make that much difference

no more ram wont give better performance in this case , 1GB is fine , yes for high resolutions , lots of AA and AF and especially if hes running vsync with triple buffering he will need alot of ram but 1GB is enough , the 1gb card has a faster core and more memory bandwidth , it will be a faster card altogether (in this instance obviously im talking specifically about these two cards i dont want to get into an argument about GPU ram usage

they should have the same memory bandwidth.

if you are playing gta4 you will need the extra ram. takes almost 2 to max out the video settings. but i would look at benchmarks for games you want to play (or max out) because you may not need top of the line. used to have a 3870 which ran crysis quite well (not maxed obviously).

either way you go, wait til the new cards come out as the 4xxx series will drastically drop in price. :cool:
