help with geforce 8600m gs

Hello, new here and wondering if anyone has run across this issue,
have a new hp laptop dv9000 with the Nvidia Geforce 8600M GS card
and when I hook up to tv either through hdmi or the svideo all works fine however as soon as i disconnect from tv the laptop monitor goes blank and even after restart it show boot screen but then thats it no windows login or anything. have to start in safe mode which i can then see screen and only solution is to uninstall display driver, reboot, and reinstall drivers. have tried old drivers, update drivers from microsoft, and update driver from nividia and all do same thing.
Please help out a newb on this, i cant afford to send to hp and wait 2 weeks for them to look at it..................

Just a guess here but, most laptops have a key that you press and it switches from the laptop display to and external display could you have possably pressed that and forgot to press it again to return to your laptop display, altho i dont know if a restart would reset this.
