Graphic Cards: Best for less??

Here was two GPU's (graphic cards) i was looking at...
RADEON HD 4850
Phenom II

Here is the computer i'm thinking of building... methinks it needs some tweaks.
CPU: Quadcore Q8200
PSU: 650W CoolerMaster
RAM: Kingston 4G @ 800 MGz
Mainboard: I don't know at this point. I was gunna buy a cheap one that would work with the things i wanted.

I stumbled accross a site about ATI and Nvidia with the 6 & 7 series... ATI had a
Geforce 6800GT vs Nvidias Geforce 6800GS which will show that while one number is lower on one, it compensates with a higher number on something else...therefore - they're the same damn thing! And look at the price difference..

Here were the differences between the two in BOLD text.

ATI Gefore 6800GT

Pixel Pipelines: 16
Core Clock: 350 MHz
RAM Clock: 1000MHz - 256MB DDR3
Price: $200

Nvidia Gefore 6800GS

Pixel Pipelines: 12
Core Clock: 400 MHz
RAM Clock: 1000MHz - 256MB DDR3
Price: $120

Anyways since i've seen this i was wondering if any of you wonderful people out there could show me a graphic the same for cheaper or maybe a better one for cheaper etc etc..

NOTE: if you could show it in AUD as i live in Australia.

Here was another Nvidia and ATI compared to one another...

ATI RADEON X1900XTX

Pixel Pipelines: 16
Core Clock: 650 MHz
RAM Clock: 1500MHz - 512MB DDR3
Price: $530

Nvidia Gefore 7900GTX

Pixel Pipelines: 24
Core Clock: 650 MHz
RAM Clock: 1600MHz - 512MB DDR3
Price: $399

Which would you choose? The crummy ATI RADEON X1900XTX for $530!! or the Nvidia Gefore 7900GTX for $399?

you could probably get a gts250 for less than all of those & it would be much better.

the Phenom II is NOT a gpu it is a cpu and it outdoes the Q8200
but the 4850 is a good gpu

Yeah I got two nvidia 9800 gt's for a little over a hundred dollars each but that 4850 IS a nice card. Not sure why you're looking at geforce 6 and 7 series cards.

I wasn't looking at the 6 & 7 series to buy. I was using it as an example.

Oh lol! i looked it up on google lastnight and thought i swear it had graphic cards up. Plus it was also 2am in the morning and i do full time TAFE (Like college).

MSY can be pretty cheap. It depends on whether your close to a store though:

MSY-The Name you can trust-More than 10 years in IT industry-Nationalwide branches serve you & always offer the best up today IT price

The 4850 is a good bang for buck card. I'm thinking about grabbing another for one for crossfire to tide me over until the high-end cards come down a lot with their high end prices.

Thought about it, crossfire and x64 is still flaky at best and more trouble than it's worth :rolleyes:

why not go ahead and get a 4870? then when crossfire is better crossfire them in the meantime use the 4870

Decided to get a ASUS GF 9800GT because it's almost the same as the RADEON 4850. I dont have the money to get a 4870 and whats that little bit more gunna do for me anyways. i don't wanna spend $500 when i can spend $200...

If I were going to spend the money on a 4870, I may as well spend extra and go for a gtx 285. From what I've read, crossfire stopped working properly with cat 8.10.... I could be in for a wait

great choice Onslaught......

that 98GT will DESTROY any of the above cards you were contemplating buying...(i.e. the 6 & 7 series)

regarding your rig...... check out this board...

its superb!!, P45 chipset, PCIE 2.0, OCs like a beast, will run all your listed H/W .& its cheap as chips....

I seem to have some people confused.. i wasn't going to buy any of the 6 & 7 series, I was meaning to compare graphic cards as an example. When i read about GPU manufacturers taking older models and basically renaming i wanted to have some insight for the higher end GPU's. Now iv'e just decided to go with the 9800GT after all the research i had done.

Graphics, Video, GPU, or the thingy that makes pretty shinny colors on the monitor.
My advice to ONSLAUGHT. If you are going to build a system on a budget, its best to do a little homework by researching whats out there and to get the most for less $$$$
Think first what are the needs of this build, (the ultimate goal, ist gaming (new games or old games) internet browsing, movie editing/viewing).
I built my rig for aroud $550 this includes Phenom BE 9850, 8GB PC6400 OCZ SLI Edition, 2 Graphic cards XFX 8600GT in SLI. PSU 550w.
Faily decent rig for todays standars, and it moves new games faily easy.
Now for game performance, newer games require better performance than older games.
When deciding what Graphic Card to buy keep in mind this word "EVOLUTION"
Buy somethig that will be able to keep up with the new for a long time, or untill it dies (wich ever comes first)
GPU specs, THE HIGHER THE BETTER GPU core speeds its how fast it will process the video. RAM the Bigger the better( but if I was to choose bettwen "620mhz 256RAM" and a "400mhz 512RAM" I will go for the 620,
FYI; If you have only 256 of RAM in your video card and your app needs more room to work, it will use some of your System RAM for video too.
Thats why I choose speed over RAM.

Hey,
I just bought a new ZOTAC 9800GT and it runs very well on my pc
except for the problem i had,
the card was too long for the board and hit the M/B power conenctor and i had to cut up the power cable lol
BTW if you are looking for good prices here in QLD i would recomend UMART.com.au

i got my G/C for $180 there where every else they were selling it for over $200!!

don't get the 9800GT.. get the 9800GTX+ before that.. but if your going to get that, might as well get the 4850, or a GTX 260.

don't get the Q8200 either, I'd get the Q9550. it's only a little more, but is a much better Chip..

Here's what I've got:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 / 2.66 GHz
Motherboard: Intel G33 Express
RAM: 8 GB DDR2 SDRAM @ 800 MHz
PSU: 550 W
GPU: VisionTek Radeon HD4850

The 4850 is a really really nice card. My comp came standard with Nvidia GeForce 9500 GS that was not awful, but not great by any means other than it was quiet. That's the only downside of t8he 450: It is a little loud. That's it. It requires a 450W PSU and recommends a 550. Absolutely the best card for the price. 200 in Best Buy for a HD 4850, $450 in Best Buy for a GTX 260. And the 4850 is pretty close to the 280. I got my 4850 on sale at Best Buy for $149.
