Why multiple monitors?

Have a question for those using more than one monitor. How does this help productivity? And what do you use such a setup for?

You can drag programs over to the other screen and it basically makes your screen bigger.

Some people use them to display stats for web servers.
Some people have there mail displayed.
Some people use the multiple monitor setup for use with CAD or photo programs.
It depends on what you are doing.
I dont use multiple displays, I have my laptop as a secondary computer for doing things if the main one is being used.
Having a secondary display also depends on the person, some people like them some dislike them.

As somebody that has a 4 monitor setup, I can tell you it massively increases productivity if you are using more than one window/app for a period of time.

I find it an invaluable tool when writing code or designing graphics, if you do have the resources to try it out, I would recommend doing so as it makes working on the PC so much easier.

I have two matching monitors. One I use for gaming on and the other I use to keep an eye on IRC, since Im a game admin its useful to view reports of infractions.

That is what got me started using two monitors, made it so much easier to admin a server when you can see the chatlogs, etc, keep an eye on Teamspeak/Ventrilo, you name it. Also comes in very handy when just browsing as you can have your browser one on and your IM, email anything you want on the second.

P.S. Any of you that are using multi-monitors, are you using Ultramon as well?

Not free but well worth it IMO.

i have been using 2 monitors for a few months now and i almost stopped because of full screen issues and the trouble of having the task bar only on my main, but ultramon fixed alllll my problems and makes it wonderful!!
i play wow or dead space or whatever on my 22" lcd while i can browse the net or have IMs and stuff up on my crt.
also makes homework a breeze with reference pages/google(lol) on one and word up on the other instead of alt tabbing 503543 times

ive been using an s video 32in tv as my second monitor. its great for media center and also gaming. i dont think i could live without a second display. whenever i take my tower somewhere and have to use a single display i feel like everything is so cluttered just because im used to having my sidebar on the tv as well. so its definitely handy. besides almost all video cards come with the support standard. and with the prices of hdtvs it should be a sin not to play with all the new toys lol

Ok guys you have all convinced me, not my wife but hey.
I will be buying a new 22" to go with the one I have. I will post before and after pics on the "show us your rig" when I have worked everything out.

Roy, you wont regret it.

After a few hours of using them you will wonder how you survived on one screen for so long.

As has been mentioned before in this thread ultramon is a must

i completely agree lol.

whats up with this ultramon program? is it really that much better than using sayyy the nvidia control panel? thats what i use and it pretty much does everything i need it to do

Though in my case, I got there by a slightly different path: Was originally looking at a new HDTV for the bedroom. But was having trouble justifying the $1500~2K for the amount of time I typically watch the tube (between alarm clock and getting up. Then later for a short while before going to sleep). Actually discarded the idea entirely until...

I saw a 24" widescreen monitor with a built in 1080p HDTV tuner, and thought to myself "You know... that sucker could do double duty... for less than half the cost of what I was looking at before..."

So yeah - It's REALLY nice to have the second monitor for all the reasons mentioned above. AND I get to pick up the remote and turn on TV/movies/MotoGP races while gaming or working.

Try get matching make and model if you can. Although its not required. Just looks nicer.

very nice features but i dont really have a need for most of it till i get some new monitors....im way behind the times, so i will be investing is some pretty hdtv flatscreens soon so ill try it out when i do

If you do CAD or A/V work, its nice to have multiple monitors. I know game site administrators who use one for administration and one for playing. It can get expensive buying the monitor, and mount arms.

I was looking at multiple monitors for my graphics/photo work also for web based work. I can not tell you what I may get in to trouble:huh: but it is legal.
For my photo work I was going to have the main screen as my canvas and the second monitor for the resources.
As far as web sites go I do get asked to look for loop holes. (you will be suprised how easy it is to find one. A popular magazine even has a website copier program on it this month

).

I will try and buy the same type and model as mentioned before purley for looks, however my system has had its first birthday :party:

so it may be hard.
