Vista x64 Driver "not signed" question...

Only been here an hour and already on to my second problem, lol.

So my only other problem is one little hardware adapter that has 64bit drivers... but they're not signed.

Is a "Syba" Serial to USB Adapter (SY-USB-S)...

basically I need to use it so that my battey backup can talk with Windows and give reports on power spikes etc... as well as control the shutdown of windows when I'm not around if there's a power outage.

Now, it's not a huge deal as the battery backup will still work of course, but the extra features won't work until Windows can communicate with it. Unfortunatly the backup only as a serial connection (and my motherboad doesn't) so I'm forced to use the "Serial (RS232) to USB" adapter.

So I'm wondering a few things.

1) can I force Vista x64 to use the unsigned driver from the company?

2) can I trick Vista x64 into thinking the driver is signed? (or someone mod the drive to that it is signed by me?)

3) Anyone know of a signed driver from another company that will work with this item? I assume a few companies use the same chip inside the device. All it does is make a bridge from USB to serial so it's a pretty simply device as well.

4) Anyone know of another Serial to USB adapter that has singed drivers that I could purchase to replace the current one?

Tried that and it didn't work.

I've heard that sometime in August Microsoft had fixed a few of the work around for allowing non-signed drivers though... are you running this fix with all the latest updates?... and does it still work for you?

I ran as an admin and then it said the command completed... I rebooted and tried to install the driver. I clicked allow anyway twice... and Windows then said the device was installed... but then a window opened saying that some software had tried to install an non-signed driver and that the driver would be disabled.

When I check device manager, I can see the device, but Vista has it flagged with an "!" and says it's not installed.

is it possible to use WinXP 64-bit drivers in Vista???.... the reason I ask is that this device is such a simple thing I can't image Vista having issues with the driver running.

...assuming that they have signed XP64 drivers I guess.

Sometimes a 64 bit XP driver will work in the 64 bit Vista. This is what I had to do for my webcam. You may need to run the driver installation program with Compatibility mode set as XP.

I guess a Microsoft Update may have taken out the option to allow a unsigned driver to run.

I dont think you are going to have any joy with these, I think the best option would be to drop an email to [email protected] asking them if they have any signed MCS7703 x64 drivers.

TBH if this is how the product manual discribes putting the drivers in I would keep well away from their products.

Driver Installation in Windows Vista 64-bit:
The 64-bit version of Windows Vista is the first version of Windows that will only allow signed drivers and this restriction is built-in. MCS7703 drivers are unsigned and we request you to follow some prerequisites before installing the driver.

Preparing Vista 64-bit for Driver installation:
• Using the F8 option: Press F8 key on your keyboard while booting your PC. You will get into “Advanced Boot Options”. Select “Disable Driver Signature Enforcement”

• An F8 Advanced Boot Option introduced with Windows Vista—“Disable Driver Signature Enforcement”—is available to disable the kernel-signing enforcement only for the current boot session. This setting does not persist across boot sessions.
Note: Make sure to use F8 option every time you boot/reboot your PC before start working with MCS7703.

• Make sure that the User installing the driver must be a member of the Administrator group on the system.

Installing the Driver in Windows Vista 64-bit:
Before running the installer (OneSetup.exe) or uninstaller (OneUnst.exe) utility of MCS7703, right click on them and select “Run as administrator”. The same is shown in the following figure.

Tried the XP64 driver... didn't work... but didn't try compatible mode either... how do I do compatibility mode in Vista?

WOW... on the instructions... I'm a bit amazed they would consider that an acceptable way of getting around this. Too bad for me I guess as I bought this adapter 6 months ago when I was running 32-bit and didn't know about the 64 bit lockdown. Thanks for the email, I'll send them a message and cross my fingers.

I wanted to give an update...

I contacted both Moschip and Syba.

Moschip basically said... "we have no plans to have our driver signed"

Syba attempted to at least help me by saying that I simply have to click "continue anyway" when installing... I've given them some schooling in how Vista 64-bit REALLY works. The last email they sent said that they would work with Moschip to get "a better driver released". I then sent a reply saying "I hope you understand that the driver works, but that it has to be signed".


Anyway.... I don't think I'll hold my breath on this... soo.....

Anyone know of a way to hack the driver and have it look like it's signed so Vista lets it go?? or, anyone know of another serial/USB adapter that has signed Vista 64 drivers??
